I've got a 1970 Model 99E in .308,which I have written about some here. I won't bore the membership with a re-hash but if you want to read it click the blog link in my Sig line. I had another one in the 80's, that I got dirt cheap because it needed a stock. Neither of them had what I would classify ...

Thanks for the heads-up. I am one of those old dinosaurs who won't own a rifle w/o irons on it. I have always gone out of my way to buy one that were already drilled for them, and in view of your friend's experience I believe that was a sound decision. I did buy an old original Remington rolling blo...

Nice buck Scott, and I'd say hit where he was he probably toppled right over. I like that spot real well myself. I'm fiddling with Jeff's Outfitters' 'Winchester Ladder Sight' on a 99 Savage at the moment, at a shade over 200. My old eyes don't do real well with black-on-white bulls but I can still ...

I have pared down considerably on my reloading, mostly to simplify component purchases; and do the most with the least. For powders- H4895 for bottleneck rifles W231 for 'zero to sixty' handgun loads W296 for hot handgun loads If I added a .45-70, H4198 would get the nod. I'd probably go with a .454...

Shooting Chrony Beta Master here...excellent, reliable piece of electronic equipment; works well regardless of sunny or overcast conditions, so long as you follow the instructions which were evidently written by someone who majored in Egyptian hieroglyphics. The instructions suck, but you'll figure ...

Here is the beauty of the .454 in a carbine: It will use bullets of the same diameter as your .45 pistol. It will roughly equal the old .45 Gov't round, with cast bullets up to 350 grains. It will roughly equal the .444 Marlin with mid-weight jacketed bullets. It will carry more rounds than any .45-...

Thanks, guys- Hobie, you are dead right. I love those old Colt DA's, too. Thanks for the pics, Old Savage. I like the long Schnabel forends on those old classic 99's. The 4X I picked up looks about like your rifle at the bottom. That's probably where I'm headed with mine. I have days when I can stil...

I mentioned earlier that my ‘99’s rear dovetail was cut crooked and I didn't think I'd be able to use the ladder sight from www.jeffsoutfitters.com Well, I dug that sight back out and noticed that there was a LOT of meat on the dovetail. A light came on...I was going to have to fit it anyhow, so...

Sarge, Did you happen to notice if there was a difference between single action bar or dual action bar models? I'm pretty sure I've had both; I bought several for 'kid guns' over the years. The problem wasn't binding if the action, though; it was the shell catch that retains shells in the mag, and ...

More early results with the Savage 99...
I fired a few more shots this AM to get an idea of what I might expect in accuracy/velocity from this .308 with its 20" barrel. Shooting was done early with the temp hovering at 16 degrees and a 10 mph west wind in my face. Yes, it was cold enough to be distracting and all the other standard ex...

I horse-traded around and got into this one for about half of the going rate. http://i186.photobucket.com/albums/x187/SargeMO/Sav99E.jpg I'm generally pretty practical about my guns; it has to serve a specific purpose and if I don't need two tools for that job, I don't add another. I'm not by any means a collector, but I do know that I like them as well as any rifle I've ever picked up; they just fit me. I can throw up a 99 with my eyes shut and when I open them, the bead will be laying right in the notch where it belongs. It just works for me. About any old 99, that don't loo...

I don't have a Clint Walker story but I do have to add this. I was a kid in the early sixties when Walker, Eastwood, Lee Marvin, Steve McQueen, John Wayne, Charlton Heston both the Arness brothers, Fess Parker and a few others were in their heyday. The gun magazines I devoured were rich with the wor...

99 Savage...first five shots
Thanks to you all, and Hobie thanks for the warm 'welcome home'. I've had a couple of evenings to fiddle with this thing now...the stock & forend were both loose, so I peeled 'em off and put a little oil where no oil had obviously been, for several years. Both the striker & sear had grunge/c...

Howdy folks. Looks like winter chores may finally taper off a bit, so I checked in here & found that I needed to re-register. Hope the old gang is still around & all doing well. I cobbed-onto a Savage 99 in .308, the other day. http://i186.photobucket.com/albums/x187/SargeMO/Sav99E.jpg I've ...
