The Marlin 336 is a great sporting/ hunting rifle. It would make a poor patrol carbine as it is hard to chamber a round at other than vertical. The 94 is more versital in various roles including defense, truck gun, etc
Thanks for posting photo. The 94 is a joy to handle and shoot. It's been a few years. I have had Marlins for 10 years. The Winchester 94 is great to handle.hard to beat a 30-30.
I was 23 when my 94 was made. Winchesters are becoming more valuable. This one is pretty rough. I'd like to re finish the stock. Will it matter to the value of the rifle. I traded a older store brand Marlin for it plus some cash. I don't think it has "collector value" as such. I am sure th...
I view the baby boom generation (I am one) as a bridge generation. As has been posted many recall talking to parents or grandparent who lived in a pre machine age. The boomers also will talk to those who may go Mars and have never been in a world without computers. My father died 20 years ago never ...
Grizz, I have had that 99 for about a year. I traded a Glock for it at the hight of the rush for AR15. And other semi weapons. The dealer traded even. I guess none of the high speed guys wanted an antique lever gun. However I am older than the rifle. I wish you success in getting another. Wen I was ...
I do not think the"x" is original. Specially not in that spot over the Savage brand stamp.
Home from work to look over my 99f .243. There is a "2" stamped in a similar spot but lower not overlapping "Savage" logo. "X" does not belong there.
I got neighbors that shoot on all sides. Makes me nervous, but they still ain't invited me over to shoot with them. That would "calm" my nerves.
I think it could help them to know that someone in the neighbor hood is armed.
I don't think it is near a $600. gun. .243 usually get a premium price but this one has to many problems. The X looks like a small chisel made it not a stamp. It is a post million rifle with no round counter. I got last year a 99f in.243 in some better shape than the one listed. It is pre million fr...
I got a 310 set to go with my antique (1932) Marlin 93. It is easy to use adds some completeness to my set up. But as you say they are expensive. They are fun to use. Check Ebay fly occasional bargain on those
Only one? Hard question for today when we have so many choices. My dad had one rifle. It was his sporterized 03-A3, 30-06. To choose one I go with my Marlin 30-30. Ain't seen any zombies in these parts.
That is in good shape, I saw one on ebay for $99. It will have to wait. Marlin, and ideal had some sort of corporate ties or combined ownership at one time.
The 310 is printed 25-35, but that has the same base brass as 30-30. The loading dies are 30-30 and fit the hand tool. The old time steel tools fit one caliber. The Marble is a M36. I thought it would fit the 93, but it did only put far back on the tang which makes it better as I can grip the rifle ...
As much as I am able I wanted to have period tools and gear for the 93. The load tools came on ebay a couple of weeks ago. The hand tool is the old iron tool specific to "25-35" but will do 30-30 as they have the same base. I also got a tang sight for the rifle. Not exactly the right one b...
I posted this on the Marlin sight, but thought the lever gunners here might enjoy the photos of my 93 and load gear. The gear consist of Lyman ideal tools; 310 hand press, 30-30 dies, full length sizer, bullet mold, led pot, dipper, and gas checks.
I saw one of those mini lathes for $350. At a local pawn shop. It has 12 in between centers. Do any of you here use one of these. Are these worth the time and price? I do not have space for a floor lathe even a small one.
I read a 1930 NRA article predicting the demise of the 30-30 as it is a once a year hunter. It was described as a "brush" gun. That was 80 + years ago. I guess the 30WCF didn't read the article. The 30-30 and the levergun was outclassed by power from the beginning I.e. 30-40 Krag, 7mm Maus...
I completed the pillar installation on the 44 and put in a couple of aluminum soda can washers to lighten the trigger. There is good results. The target is centered and less scattered. This is today's 100 yard target http://i209.photobucket.com/albums/bb108/RickFoster/35211a5c-10dc-4095-bea9-85f379a...
My groups at the range had little improvement, but I have not secured the pillars with epoxy yet. I have not slugged the barrel. Not giving up. I did get the pillars glued in last evening. The next step is to reduce trigger pull.
It will need pillar front and back and epoxy bedding. I bought a drill press yesterday to get the holes right. The pillars are available from "Rock Solid" of Aluminum that require 1/2inch whole. The homemade ones will take 7/16.
I have been using this rifle in a service rifle match every couple of months at the local gun club against Garands, ARs, and M1As. This is a 200 yard open sight match standing, sitting, nealing, and prone. No slings or rest. I'd like to do better at the match.
I have a post WWII M44 of Hungarian manufacture. It was made in 1953. It has been used a lot probably used in the 1956 uprising. It was made in Budapest. It looks like an old war horse. I think the difference between carbine and Rife are small.
I have two M44's. I have been wanting to do a accuracy project on these rifle so have started with putting in pillard at the action bolts. I want to use regular hardware store supples. I got plumbing pipe for the pillars. It is 7/16 with the ID of 1/4. it fits the actions bolts. At my first test it ...
The "lime-a-way" was very effective in removing the rust. This morning I used 000steel wool and Rem oil. I can see a shine, land and grooves. More at the end of the week. There was lots of rust. It is not shreading patches now.
Well I have it apart in the shop with barrel plugged and filled with lime a way. 1. Clear rust. 2 deal with roughness. I am thinking of low velocity cast lead reloads and valve grinding/ polishing compound to " fire lap" barrel.
Well I was sedused by an m44 mosin today at a pawn shop. It looked so much better than the one I have been shooting. But when I got it home for a closer inspection it seems my old Hungarian with a shiny barrel looks good. Apparently the owner of the "new" M44 never cleaned the rifle. There...
The Sierra data list imr4895 32gr as a minimum charge. I used it cause powder is scares and that is what I had most of. I may stick to commercial ammo until the supply "drought" lets up. I will be looking for a die set. Lots of good advice. I strictly avoid hot roding loads. The middle is ...
