Whats your field carry knife? Thoughts?

Post by Blackhawk »

Thinking of getting a field knife, straight blade for fathers day. I like crossdraw carry for guns and knives. Got a Benchmade Nimravus but was thinking of something bigger, maybe a Cold Steel Bowie. Got my dad a Puma Skinner years ago and really like it. Anyone have thoughts or comments. Gona keep the price around $100.

I always have my old Randall with me when out in the hills. Not that I need a belt knife all the time, the Buck 112 is a very good practical knife, but,...there's things out there. Seriously.

Knives don't run out of ammo.

30 year old Gerber Magnum Hunter (folder). It will skin several head of big game before it needs to be stoned. If you need to fight Griz, that is what the Super Redhawk .454 Alaskan is for.

This is always in my backpack when I hunt.
Used to carry a Buck folder exclusively, but decided I wanted a longer blade for dressing mule deer. I also have SOG Pentagon and Sog mini-Pentagon knives. They are very well made and hold a good edge. (so does the Buck)

Cold Steel Recon Scout, with 7 1/2" blade.. That's plenty of blade for belt carry. Anything much bigger tends to get in the way sometimes.. When fiekd dressing is on the menu, it's hard to beat the little Cold Steel Master Hunter... There's always a good folder in my pocket, and they can be handy For lots of chores, but I don't like having to clean blood and crud out of the workings...

I'm pretty sure I could field dress a deer with a Leatherman. I have several expensive knives, but usually find myself taking this Smallish Old Timer with the soft green handle, and gut hook. Stays plenty sharp, cost about 35 bucks many moons ago. I don't know that I'd really want a Chinese Old Timer/Schrade.
My EDC Voyager folder would do the trick, but like Buck don't want to make a mess of it.

I've gone through several brands for hunting. Last year I bought a Buck 113 Ranger Alaskan Guide Series. What a beautiful knife. I dressed two elk and its still very sharp.

For heavy duty camp shores I got a Kabar BK2. It's the beefiest knife I've ever owned. About a pound! Very heavy duty and impressive. It seems indestructable.....so far. You can get them for about $70 online

I have a Morseth made in Alaska laminated drop point with linen micarta grip. Use it for boning venison and attempted finger amputation. The sink prevented my success.

I've opened and gutted many deer with a tiny gerber folder. Easy to reach inside and sever the diaphragm without cutting anything else. Easy to skin warm animals with it too. I hang 'em by the neck and the skin practically falls off.

Eventually I smartened up and started disassembling the hanging meat with a 12 inch recip-saw blade. Works on warm and frozen meat. Expedites the boning process and gets more venison in the freezer in less time than the paleo method.

Now days the moras are my boat and bush knives

I like my Chris Reeve "Aviator". 4" clip point seems to be long enough and short enough at the same time. Though I have to admit that lately I've been carrying my Holy Grail knife.

Grizz, I used a Gerber LST on the two antelope I shot and dressed. Can't go wrong with the Master Hunter from a Cold Steel. Mine is AUS 8 which is a great steel with their heat treat.

yeah, that's a good one for sure.

I think the average knife I see for hunters is huge. A strong blade is useful for separating the bone joints cause a little twist is called for, but the tiny blade will do it too, get the knee bones apart. but the morseth size blade will split the breast bone with little effort.

how do those antelope taste? I ate some when I was a kid but not since. don't remember much about them. I like the way they look, beautiful animals.

I carry most often a Kershaw "Blur" folder with spring assist --- its a model of that line that has a full blade, (not a half serrated thing)
---- blade is maybe 3- 3.5" long and is honestly all i need --- although i have a fixation on nice stag handled custom fixed blades for lookin' at

In the Cold Steel line, i like the Military Classic --- its a shameless , but very good, copy of a Randall #1 -- you might have to scour ebay to get one under a c-note though

Dang, you and I do have several similarities - the recon scout is my favorite- and a knife I would want if survival was at stake; I also take a master hunter with me for general field dressing chores etc

and we agree , I think, that a stout loaded 45/70 ( an 1886 for me) is my favorite all around go to rifle

My pocket knife is an old Italian hunters switch blade- very sturdy, with a saw

I like the Cold Steel knives. I've carried a Recon I folder for about 5 years or better and put it through a ton of abuse. I guess knives are like guns, ya just can't have too many.

The Buck series that are made in the USA are getting a hard look to! Anyone use'em?

The Super Leatherman. It has 2 blades, long ago I filed past the serrated stuff, I like smooth blades. It's on my belt 24/7 365 days a year. I'm on the 4th or 5th sheath. I have many fixed blades but this one is always with me.

I have this model in a 4" clip point and a 4" drop point.

Any bigger than the 7" and they're "in the way" on the belt, any smaller and they're work on big game... IMO.

I've had mine so long and used it so much the hinge pins/joints are shot.

It does. I've used Leatherman tools since they came on the market. Or should I say abused them. I've sent several back and in each case they replaced them. In some cases they no longer made that particular model so they replaced it with the current equivalent.

These are the two knives I keep going back to. The Cold Steel Pocket Bushman and the Schrade SS1 are almost always top choice to ride in my pockets. Both are dependable work horses in the role they play. The Pocket Bushman locks up solid... it's the nearest to a fixed blade a folder can get. Cost is usually around $40 shipped, NIB. The SS1 has remained sharp for years and is only now needing its first sharpening. Of course it is only been called on to do the light duty chores. It is flat and hides in my pocket with the change yet easy to find when needed.

I have a Dozier that a friend in FBI SWAT traded to me in the mid 90's that I have skinned a lot of deer and other critters with that still has not been sharpened and doesn't need to be. I carry it and a crew served knife when out for a while which one depends on where I am going.

I'm too hard on Leatherman knives... 2 strand? don't. Banding? Don't. 8 ga wire? Well... OK... If you must... but your blade will be dull in 30sec while stripping the wire... The blade steel is too soft and I invariably break the pliers. I think I quit buying them after the third pair...

I haven't had those bad experiences with my old Leatherman Super Tool. Like I said earlier I've worn out about 4 leather cases. I also wore out the hinges on a SOG equivalent tool. Once I skinned a whole bull elk with it, using the 2 blades and the saw. Have also used it to cut a crutch when I snapped my ankle on a hunt. When in camp everyone wants to borrow it for some job or another, I don't know how they get by without one.
I have custom knives and name brand knives, folders and fixed blades, but by far this has been the handiest. When used as pliers they hurt my hands, but maybe that has saved me from breaking them.

For belt carry and regular/light-medium use you'll have a hard time beating the Nimravus. It's so light and fits tight in to your body you can forget you've got it. For anything heavier that the Nimravus won't handle I'd recommend a light weight kukri type blade. I know it's a chopping style knife and not a straight blade, but you'd be surprised how much finesse you can get out of one that's sharp. The Cold Steel Recon Scout and Outdoors Man are hard to beat too.

I've got an old Carbon V Cold Steel LTC kukri that's attached to my field belt that is still light weight but cuts better than a hatchet for firewood or shelter building. Easy to attach to a small ruck or day pack too.

This knife impresses mehttp://www.schrade-knives.com/SCHBOLO.html with all the extras you get with it. When my penny bank gets full I'll have one. You can find it for a better price on Ebay.

I don't know how I missed the part about straight blade. Sorry. Since it's for Fathers Day go to a Gun Show. There are usually lots of knives at Gun Shows. Then you can see and feel them and probably get a good buy as well.

I have not seen any multi-tool that is designed for heavy work since their purpose is being small and light. They were originally designed for fixing bicycles on long trips, such as the one that Tim Leatherman took after graduating with his engineering degree. He found the tools of the time to be less than ideal for his purposes and developed his own tool to rectify the situation. Handling steel wire such as barbed wire is not really a realistic goal of a small pocket tool. If you want a better knife blade, then check out the Leatherman Charge with the 154CM blade. That steel is about as good as stainless can get. As far as wanting a folding, small, light pocket tool to stand up to fencing and blasting, well, the design limits and material limits sort of get in the way.

Denney's Knives. He lives just a few miles from me. I have a really neat little packable bow saw that he makes, too.

Not sure what he calls the knife - I drew a picture and he made it. If you tell him you like the one he he made for me, he will know what you are talking about.

The little Gerber LST is always in my pocket, like others it will field dress deer easily. The blade is a 400 series SS which sharpens OK but won't hold an edge too long. I like it because it takes up no space, weighs nothing and is non threatening. Except I did loose one to TSA. In the field Ive started carrying a BuckTops Nighthawk in a sheath I made from kydex. The bigger fixed blade will split sterna or pelvises without a hitch.I The kydex is lightweight and durable. Ive broken an LST on a sternum once.
