What a rat. 61 pictures and $600 for that? EG wood stuck on a post-mill E(conomy).
"X" probably marks the spot.

+1 - a Grey Rat, for sure.
My WAG is that the bbl & action were marked "X" for destruction, maybe after a fire, but some genius "saved" it & installed a set of discarded EG wood.
Looking through all those pics was probably the biggest waste of time I've experienced in 30 years.

I don't think it is near a $600. gun. .243 usually get a premium price but this one has to many problems. The X looks like a small chisel made it not a stamp. It is a post million rifle with no round counter. I got last year a 99f in.243 in some better shape than the one listed. It is pre million from 1957. It got to the top of my favorite rifle list real quick. I don't think mine is a $600 dollar rifle. Maybe five. It does not have stock repair and has lost less blue. You probably looked at others on GB for comparison.

No. The X was the curiosity to me and I never saw that before. Seller writes it up like it's part of the model.

Re: Savage 99
I do not think the"x" is original. Specially not in that spot over the Savage brand stamp.
Home from work to look over my 99f .243. There is a "2" stamped in a similar spot but lower not overlapping "Savage" logo. "X" does not belong there.
