Re: rumors of new savage M 99

I have one in .250-3000, and as much as I admire the 99, it is just too heavy for the caliber. Now something that would handle a beefy .40+ caliber would get very interesting. By the way, you should have seen the look on the tracker's face when my brother uncased his .300 Savage 99 in Namibia last y...

Re: We are home from Mozambique

Jim: Good to hear of your safe return. I noticed that contrast between rich and poor when I was in Namibia a year ago. The rural towns were packed with capable men and women whiling away the hours of each day, hoping for a job that would never come. Discouraging.

If it gets Europeans converted to drinking the "king" of rice beers, maybe it will lower the value of the euro against the dollar, which I call a win-win.

Re: Shooting in the Heat of Summer

I never trust three-shot groups, so don't ever shoot them. I was at the range Wednesday afternoon in 104-degree heat, and was shooting a Savage 30G Favorite in .22 LR and a CZ 452 in 17 HMR2, and barrel heating was not an issue. But then we shot a few clays with the little CZ .410 Bobwhite, and that...

Favorite loads for .25-35?

Love to hear what you fellows are shooting. I'm looking for a good load with the 117-grain Hornady RN, and anything else you want to share.
Thanks!

OT: Oregon balloon man

Most of you no doubt heard about my fellow Oregonian, Kent Couch, who achieved his goal Saturday of flying in a lawn chair lifted by helium balloons from Bend, Oregon, to Cambridge, Idaho. When he crossed over Hell's Canyon in that contraption, he must have felt the wonder of God's creation. Anyway,...

Re: Roy Chapman Andrews & 250 Savage

He wrote a book on dinosaurs for younger readers that I read as a kid. As far as his hunting exploits are concerned, he really put the early Savages through their paces. But I believe he also praised the .22 Savage High-Power as a big game cartridge. I have a 99 in .250-3000, but don't think I would...

Re: OT - Civil War Movie picks...

Those are good ones. My favorite Civil War film is Ang Lee's "Ride With the Devil," which tells the side of the Missouri Bushwhackers. There was a lot of meanness, evil and injustice inflicted by both sides in the Border Wars along the Kansas and Missouri borders, as well as courage and co...

Re: Savage 99 re-barrel

I have a nice old 99 in .250-3000, but with the 1:14 twist. I wish to heck it had the faster twist, but I can hardly bring myself to alter it, as it was gift from a beloved uncle who doted on the .250.

Bigbore: There's ALWAYS room in this old world for one more bullet lube. I agree that a small, round tin would be fine for muzzleloading -- just like the tins Dixie sells their Old Zip in. I like my SPG in the hollow sticks for the lubrisizer, though.

Re: Rebarrel a Marlin to .25-35

Jn: That's the kind of accuracy the .25-35 is famous for, and if yours is an original barrel, it should have the 1:8 twist.

Re: Rebarrel a Marlin to .25-35

Guys, thanks for the posts. I see Brownell's carries a Wind River octagon barrel for Winchester and Marlin lever guns in .25 caliber, but the twist is 1:10. Part of the .25/35's sterling accuracy reputation was based on the 1:8 twist in the original barrels, I believe. The Wind River tubes are $234....

Rebarrel a Marlin to .25-35

Guys, I have a 1949 Marlin 336 SC in .30-30 that I'd like to rebarrel to .25-35. Any suggestions on smiths to do the work, and whose barrel to use? This may just be too expensive to fool with, but I sure miss the old Model 94 octagon rifle I had in this caliber.
