.69 caliber 823 grain miniballs

Post by preventec47 »

I was reading in a buddies magazine the other day
about some mid 1800 muskets with rifled barrels
that shot up to 823 grain cast bullets.

Obviously black powder but I dont know whether flint lock
or not since some had rifled barrels. I wonder
what velocities they were achieving and how accurate
the best of them could be ? I guess the bears back
then were as big or bigger than today.

at .69 it's not hard to get 823 gr. Heck, a .690 round ball is (IIRC) 440gr or there abouts.

Just think of it as a big, 2oz 12ga slug.

My 1842 Springfield repro is rifled and shoots those slugs. I have the mold and 10 lbs of soft lead doesn't last long. I will try and get some pics up in a few days. Headed out of town until Sunday. Later, moodyholler

I was thinking the military design was a 730 gr. bullet... They are a whole lot of gun, smooth or rifled.
