'76s-you can tell by looking at the wrist of the stock; the receiver on a '73 extends noticeably further down into the wrist when compared to a '76. Great picture!

How do you go about stripping the wood? I've not messed with anything like that before, but if it's simple enough, I may want to give it a go as a stop gap until the funds are available for a trip to Turnbull. Looks like it's probably a pretty enough couple of pieces of walnut underneath.

Chiappa does not make an 1876 copy, that would be Chaparral.

Not cheap at $149.99 for the 8 pound can of Unique, but I was willing to pay it, considering the uncertainty of when it will become available again and the fact that I've been out of Unique for a long time. The IMR 4064 was $25.99 for a pound.

I got my Chiappa '92 back from Steve two or three months ago, and it's almost like he sent back a different rifle. Now it's just as smooth as my Browning 1886.

I believe it was the model 1881. They made it in a couple of different frame sizes, if memory serves, and in a few other calibres, such as 38-55.

Isn't this the revolver that, at least according to legend, Winchester showed to the folks at Colt to discourage them from going into the levergun business? For some reason, I'm wanting to say that Borchardt may have had a hand in the design, but my memory could very well be playing me false.

Can't speak for current stock, but Taylor's had them in their warehouse ready to sell, with the walnut stock, just a few months ago in the Autumn. I handled one, and it was a very nice rifle.

I handled one of the standard 86/71 models up at Taylor's shop in Winchester, Virginia a couple of months back; it was a 45-70 and was a very nice rifle. Didn't bother asking the price, as I was looking to buy. Pedersoli makes a fine gun, at least judging from my Sharps.

My understanding is the steel used in the receiver will not take CCH, that it is harder and stronger to take the extra beating, at least that's the scuttlebutt on the internet.
