AJMD429 - good points. I think mosty in "known" bear and mountain lion country there's comfort in having a larger (.357+) bore handgun on your person or handy close by even if there's a long gun present. Even javelina on your trail can be nasty and can give you a start rounding.a blind ben...

Having a hard time editing my post off the mobile. I meant my combo gun rifles are Rossi 92s not Win 92 (wishful thinking!)...in .357 or .44 paired with same cal handuns noted.

I've shot my marlin 30-30 back to back with a marlin 44mag, and I thougth that the .44 recoil was more unpleasant than the 30-30 It's good to see I'm not the only one who sees things that way. We've got coyotes taking over (and taking pets) in Paradise Valley (NE Phoenix) and I saw one trotting around a neighborhood in south-central Scottsdale the other morning, as if it was nothing. I'm thinking some of our eagles or hawks should swoop down and take care of some of the 'yote pups!

What the charts don't tell you is "felt" recoil. They've always put .44 Mag ahead of .30-30 by a pound or so, which I've found odd from my experience. The .30-30 is not bad at all to me (out of a typical 20"), but while the .44's is a "different" kind of recoil--sharper cycl...
