Re: peep sight - oops?

At the risk of generalizing I agree with Hobie. I had a similar problem with a tang sight, and corrected it myself by bedding the sight base to the tang. Shim the base to the correct angle with masking tape affixed to the tang. Degrease the sight base, and roughen it lightly with some 80 grit emory ...

Re: 30-30 plinking loads

Just noticed the beartooth bullets have gaschecks, so you may push them harder... more velocity. If you are interested in lower velocities of around 1350fps, order up some 180grn bullets from bear creek supply. They will run you $28.00 for 400 bullets. My barrel is a 1 in 10 twist and it loves them.

Re: 30-30 plinking loads

I like a 180grn bullet over 10grns of unique. The longer bullets are easier to handle when reloading. They also offer a longer bearing surface for better grip on the rifling, and may prevent skipping in the bore(maybe not a real problem anyway). Also there is less bullet jump to reach the lands. The...

Joe,
I think the bearing suface is only important in respect that there must be sufficient area to impart a rotation to the projectile. The amount of twist required is related to the mass, length and velocity of the projectile.

The stock can probably be refinished without stripping back to bare wood. Chips in the finish can be built up with epoxy resin. Mold temp not stable, or pot temp changing. Make sure lead is clean and well fluxed. A 5grn variance on a 405grn bullet wont make a lot of difference to accuracy.
Weight sort your bullets if you want better tolerances.

It is not impossible to have a bad batch of bullets. Bad cores can upset the flight of the bullet. Weigh a few of them if you can. If light ones start showing up, maybe voids in the cores.
