Yes, and how about the word shot (S.H.O.T.) and shoot (S.H.O.O.T). what is going on here?

So far I've noticed (just today) that if 'sh' is followed by 'ot', 'ut', 'oot', or 'ort', it gets turned into ****'s.
I was tempted to type in the 'it' version just to see what would happen, but didn't...

Re: Perhaps the word butt could be removed from filter
The problem seems to be this. There are forum members who try/tried to be cute with their alternate spellings of certain words. They know the rules but like the guy at the Newark airport they just can't accept them. This attempt to cover those attempts created some odd wild-card censors.
For those of you who might think that I'm overly sensitive, think again. After 27½ years in military service I've heard most every word or combination thereof and many in 4 different languages including ASL. You really can't offend me. However, the owner gave me a charge to maintain the forum at a certain level of decorum. I don't allow words that I wouldn't use in front of my mother or daughters. That's pretty easy to follow. Members wouldn't have a problem reading the topics if those words and attempts to skirt the rules were avoided by the posters.

My apologies for experimenting above. I didn't mean to imply any bad words.

FWIW, the word "butt" isn't censored. In fact it has been used as a substitute for another word for that region of the anatomy...

Re: Perhaps the word butt could be removed from filter
We know you didn't, Kirk. The problem is that some folks get too cute with their attempts to use less than polite language. The word censor is not that smart so it went farther than it was intended to go. If folks would simply put more thought into their posts rather than simply falling into the trap of "strong" language it would make life easier for all. There are plenty of places on the net where one can use any language they do desire. This is one of the few places that attempts to keep things on a more civilized and decent level. But habits aren't that easy to change and some refuse to make the effort, preferring to seek ways to circumvent the rules. Like Hobie, there's nothing folks can say to me that hasn't been said in three or more languages. But that's not the type of environment this board should have. And this explanation isn't pointed at you, Kirk. It's for those who will read it and who have slipped into the mentality of "let's see how we can slip some vulgarity in here". Like Colombians who find millions of ways to export cocain, more effort is placed in ways of circumventing the rules than is used to find proper ways of communication. That's sad.KirkD wrote:My apologies for experimenting above. I didn't mean to imply any bad words.

Post that word here and I'll then be able to track down the why of it (maybe).

I want to thank you again Hobie, it is a blessing to come to this site and not have to put up with foul talk. Thank God I don't go there anymore. This is the only forum I am on and this is the reason I enjoy it.

Computer censors are about as dumb as a box of rocks. On another forum, I tried six different ways to finally be able to post a man's name (Fackler). Finally broke it into sylables and hyphenated it. STUPID!

I can only imagine the creative spellings the censor was programmed to catch... it makes life simpler for everyone when folks content themselves with polite discourse rather than ignoring forum rules and etiquette and attempting to force their language misuse on others. Those of us charged with maintaining the forum find ourselves backed into a corner by the simple refusal of some to be polite and remember that this is, after all, another man's virtual livingroom which he's made available for us to use. And my house rules don't apply when I'm in another man's living area. If I don't like the way a home is run (virtual or physical, it matters not) then I don't need to go there. It's quite simple, really. If only folks would remember where they are when posting and would observe the simple rules we've covered time after time, then we'd have no need for a word censor at all.

Re: Perhaps the word butt could be removed from filter
Ah yes, but the socialist would say we need to make it impossible for vulgarity, protect against the weakness of man, etc. The conservative would just make a rule, post it conspicuously, and upon the first violation offer a matter-of-fact warning, on the second, ban the violator with no fanfare, INSTEAD OF making life less than pleasant for the rest of us who try to post perfectly innocent stuff the stupid box doesn't like.....AmBraCol wrote:adirondakjack wrote:Computer censors are about as dumb as a box of rocks. I've been known to use a fair amount of rough language in appropriate venues, but know enough not to in other places. How hard is that to understand? We all know the words, and nothing is gained playing cat and mouse with a computer program.....
