Re: Just checking in.

Nice you are getting out. Made me think, it's about about 40 years since I shot a Snipe. Nice shooting! And I'm curious, what is the common practice for carrying a double with hammers, open and cocked, or? It's a muzzleloader but either way I keep the gun closed and hammers cocked unless I get dist...

Re: Just checking in.

A couple of years ago I shot a snipe with a muzzleloader. Never thought I would do it again but I just did! The first bird was easy, just passing. None of their usual zig zagging but the second bird was a zig zagger. The first barrel missed but the second at 40yds and the bird fast, left to right co...

Thanks for the kind words. It snowed here today. Quite rare in these parts. I got out first light to find a fox I've been fooling with for 3weeks. I found it and got down to 100yds plus in heavy snow fall. Heart shot it lept up in the air, ran 20 and folded up. 20g hmr. IMG_20201229_093356.jpg IMG-2...

So how's it going? The world is getting madder. I'm getting older and fatter, have a club foot from gout and was made redundant three weeks ago. But that hasn't stopped my shooting! I got me a cz457 in 22 and liked it so much I got a 457 in hmr also. Both rifles seem to shoot most brands of ammo exc...

Great job Nath, and with a flinter in foul weather. You continue to inspire! 8) Meant to ask -- what is your fowler's bore size and what was your load? Think it used 70gn 3f. Three thin cards. 1&1/8oz of #6 and a soaked (olive oil) fibre wad on top of the lot. Bore measures .63". Thanks everyone. T...

Pheasant.

Always try and take my first pheasant of the season with a flintlock, certainly a muzzleloader. Its was a foul day to get out before light. Cold and wind driven heavy showers. The morning hunt drew a blank so I went home empty handed. Back out for afternoon eventually I found my rooster. Managing a ...

Re: Smoothbore this season.....

How about two balls instead of buck shot.
My 45 shoots two .445" very well to 50yards (smoothbore).
I don't use patches in smooth bores either. Just a stack of overshot cards. Lube for fouling control and card on top.
Forget the dry lube nonsense!

Use wire wool in the chambers spun by a drill. Bronze brushes are recommended by anxious people.

I got a new zabala box lock ejector 3" high pressure steel recently too 👍.

Re: Bolt Thrust Experiment #3 .22 LR & .44-40

If there's no force on the bolt, why do the pins and holes in the '73's toggle system 'oval' over time firing heavy loads? Why are there smears on the bolt face of hot loads in a semi-auto? Ask Steve Young how many rifles and carbines he's had to repair due to bolt thrust. Any force applied to the ...

I only spent 41+ years in Aerospace so what do I know but if there's no bolt thrust, there's no recoil either. As the 'equal and opposite' forces to accelerating the bullet out the muzzle are exerted on the receiver and action, of which the bolt plays a central part, it seems to this old guy...
