I use a lever gun and am proud of it.

I don't know much about what's happening anywhere ... other than this year The Shootists will be celebrating their 40th Anniversary! It's hard to believe that we've been going that long. Ain't too many of us original Shootists around any more. John Taffin is still with us but is having serious health issues. There's me, Brian Pearce, Paco Kelly, Bob Baker and Bud McDonald ... I think that's all of the original group that's left.

They got real popular amongst one my old mining crews in late 70's-early 80's, and I'm talking some serous squirrel
hunters. I never owned one, was using either a Rem Wingmaster or A5 Browing Lighttwelve then. But left there in early 80's can't recall seeing one since.

I just thought of this....

With the wide variety of game you have to harvest over there, I would think that either a Drilling (3 bores: 16 ga, .22 Magnum insert (an Einstecklauf) in one 16 bore, and an 8mm Mauser barrel below), or a Bockbuschflinte (2 bores: shotgun over rifle) would be ideal for you and give you a lot of flexibility -- and expanded opportunities in the field.

But then, you'd only have 1 gun -- instead of 2 or 3...

Could that be why you don't indulge in multi-chamber offerings?

Hope all is well. I fondly remember having a "real conversation" with you by phone the last time I was in England -- yet that was well over 15 years ago.

Thanks Dd, I've heard some say they are fragile.
I believe they were made by Howa, Japan.
This one seems to need to be spotless or it can get a little sticky. I don't usually use oil in modern automatic shotguns but this one seems to need a drop and frequent clean.

15 years ago... I remember yes

I have owned three combinations, just Savage's.
The drillings and the other configurations don't seem to ever get popular in Britain, probably less so than lever gun actions!
They are generally perceived to be used on a driven hunt which doesn't really happen over here except for driven bird shooting.
Folks are more obsessed in tactical gear these days, itty bitty tiny groups then go shoot a deer at 100 yds with a scope that you can count craters on the moon with! I think some rifles now weigh more than the deer they hope to get!!
Besides, I like a few choices, gives me something to grumble about when I make the wrong choice....

I'm not sure, some kind folks sent me a bunch of bullets they didn't want for me to recycle. I've had all sorts.
Pretty much all of them work but some have to be loaded backwards.

Well they did make round-barrel 20-inchers, and octagonal ones that were longer.

I managed to find a 45 Colt round barrel and it was a one-piece swap to make my 44 Mag Marlin 1894 into a 45 Colt - I called Marlin to be sure, and they verified that ALL the other parts are the same except the barrel.

I picked up a new Marlin 1894S .45LC--straight stock, 20" barrel--in '89. Seems to me it wasn't long after that they stopped offering that particular model and chambering. Every so often it gets an airing and some exercise and it does quite well.

I was big on getting a drilling so I had options in a single gun . Acquired four of them then realized I didn’t really care for the way it felt in my hands .
