Re: First 30-30 mold
Fortunately with Accurate you can get the size you need based on the alloy you use. I've become a big fan of Accurate Moulds for that reason. I've ordered all mine in brass and prefer that over aluminum or steel .... it just seems easier to me to keep the mould at the proper temperature, and I don'...

Re: Finally settled on my 32-20 load (photos)
Kirk, I had several loads with 5744 that gave good accuracy. The load I really like for my old rifle (1917)is a 100 grain XTP over 11 grains of 5744. I am hoping to take a deer with that load, maybe this year. 11 grains should move that XTP bullet along at a good enough clip to put a deer in the fr...

I have been trying a wide variety of powders and loads over the past couple years, to see which gave me the best accuracy with my Accurate Moulds 312112M plain base, cast bullet. Note: if you order this mould, crimping in the groove means that you will be levering the bullet into the lands, which pu...

Range Report-104 year old Winchester 44-40
Gentlemen, several months ago I bought an original Winchester Model 1892 made in 1913, chambered in 44 W.C.F. (44-40) to use as a shooter and a hunter. My 62 year-old eyes need a tang sight, so I managed to find an original Lyman tang sight and it arrived today. I opened the box, installed it on my ...

Got a 'new' well-used Winchester 1892 44-40 (photos)
A couple weeks back, I acquired a well-used, but nice-looking Winchester 1892 44-40 made in 1913. This past week I got to the range to try it out. I don't have a tang peep sight for it yet, so I had a hard time seeing the sights, but I am very pleased with its accuracy even when half blind. My first...

I regularly practice at 200 yards with my vintage Winchesters and tang sights. Calibers I shoot at 200 yards are 44-40, 38-55, 45-70, 30-30. Your 348 will easily be effective at 200 yards. Practice makes perfect ... resting, leaning against a tree, or offhand.

That would be the crown jewel of most Winchester collections ... absolutely gorgeous, and in my favourite '86 caliber. Re: Strength comparisons for Marlin, Henry and Rossi in 45-7
I'll vouch for the 'running out of fun' bit. I once loaded 40 rounds for my 45-70 Browning SRC 1886, that put a 400 grain bullet out the barrel at 2,000 fps. I was just wearing a T-shirt when I tried them out, and that carbine has a steel buttplate. The first round didn't feel very good, the second ...

As a general rule (noting exceptions as others have above), I use soft cast for velocities less than 1,500 fps. The only hard cast bullets (i.e., water-dropped) I use are for my 30-30 at 2,200 fps. Soft cast are especially useful when the groove diameter is so large that if one sized the bullets for...

I didn't get this one this year, but it is another nice doe I took with a Winchester Model 53 44-40 several years ago. I've shot a couple of Whitetail deer of around 200 pounds live weight, with a 44-40, both with cast bullets. I don't see any need for JSP. I cast my own from pure clip on wheel weights. You can expect your 200 grain bullet to go right through, side-to-side on a 200 pounds deer.
