I couldn't get along with the curved metal buttplate on mine.

Tend to agree Blaine and kinda heavy too, makes me love my Marlin Cowboy all the more.
Great gun in its own right though.

Very accurate shooter, for sure. I got it off a local forumite. When he got back here after the Navy, he wanted it back...he missed it. No problem.
I sold a Guide Gun, and a Cowboy....My shoulders can't take it anymore.
Only one 45-70 left, a 12 pound Shiloh Sharps.....
Got a nice microgroove .444, too....almost a 45-70

Thanks fellars, nice to have a Shiloh for sure, I have a Sharps Quigley made in Italy, another gun that`s too heavy to go far with.
Need a horse again and let it carry the rifle.

Yea, Pitchy, I bought one of those and found out it will eat anything you can cram in the case.....400 grainers at 1800 no problem. I gave it to my son and he killed two elk with it. I witnessed one of the kills.....that elk dropped like a sack of potatoes.-----6

Here is my 1886 .45-90 which weighs 9.5 pounds dry; with a tube of ammo, it must go over 10 pounds. The weight helps to dampen the recoil of the elephant loads (450grain bullets at 2150 fps) and the curved butt plate is a piece of cake once you learn where it goes on the arm and arm pit:

There is also a high grade 1886 EL .45-70 in the safe, but it gets no use since I started shooting my 1895 .405 and Simson .405 double. The weight and design of the double rifle makes even 400 grain Woodies at 2050 fps fun to shoot from the bench.

Lookin' good there pard. Yeah that 86 carbine is a handy tool. Mine's been cut off to the same length as a 94 carbine. Makes it real handy. I load 300 grainers for it since my 86 rifle won't stabilize anything much heavier. Keeps the recoil down too though that carbine butt plate is much easier to get along with than the crescent one on the rifle. How much snow you got?

Seein' your 86 has got me thinking again, and that's never good.
I got a bud with one NIB. Maybe I should make some overtures. That'd look real nice at MY house.

MMW said he loads his 1886 with 300 grain bullets.
That is also my basic load and most game taken with my 45-90 was shot with 300 grain Nosler Protected Point bullets at velocities from 1800 to 2200 fps. These have proven to be effective on everything from pronghorns to Leopards (by 86er) and they will be OK for even the biggest western prairie dogs, jackrabbits and even jackalopes. Right Shrapnel?

The heavier loads and monolithic solids are usually reserved for large and dangerous game, though one of those ele loads did drop a running bison in a rather spectacular fashion.

Yep was out feeding the stoves about 7 then had to go to the neighbors and check the heater in his pump house. brrrrrrrrrrr

Hope ya get your hands on the 86.

I took off my steel buttplate and added a 2" pad. I really like that extra length of pull.

It's not just the curved buttplate, the comb is also a little narrow. If you can find one the buttstock off one of the Winchester 1886 lightweights is a vast improvement.

I always stuck with the 405 FN because I have the mold and only shoot deer in brush country and I figure the heavier the better for that.

That 405 does make the 45-70 capable of killing most anything in North America...

it makes my 5-1/2" Redhawk capable of killing anything in NA too . . .

Nice animals BTW. Makes my mouth water . . .

True, but the 86 45-70 lets you stand further away from it.

that's so true. As I see it the handgun gives you the last 50 yards of the rifle's range.
