Re: OT - Wood Restoration

Sandblasting maybe? One of the machine shops I have worked in had a large planer mill that would machine the top easily, but it would probably take a couple of hours to handle it, set it up, and machine it. Shop rate in a place that has this kind of equipment is probably around $100 an hour.

I use Tru-oil. I sand the wood down to 400 grit, then whisker. Rub in Tru-oil (1 or 2 drops per side) with the palm of your hand until it gets hot and dry. Lighten the pressure but keep rubbing until all the gooey stuff is gone and the stock shines. Let dry overnight and sand with 400 back down to w...

Sixgun, Did Mr Taylor just reline the chamber? Maybe that would be a solution for the rusted out oversized chamber in my '95. I had Jesse re-bore the barrel to .405, and it shoots fine, but I don't think the brass will last long with the bulge it gets on firing.

I have a little D-2 Cat and love it. It is very simple to work on (gotta love 1939 technology), extremely robust, and easy to come by out here in Oregon. The D-2 came in standard and narrow gauge. Obviously, you don't want narrow guage unless you are working row crops or orchards. Also, the diesel e...

I love my 99 takedown. I have taken three deer with it. Two of the deer required a second shot with my handload containing a 100 grain Hornady interlock. I hit one small mule deer buck on the point of the shoulder but the bullet didn't enter the chest, it just stayed in the shoulder and made a mess....

I fired five rounds through the .405 today. I decided not to shoot more because it was around 12" high at 25 yards, and, since I couldn't find any brass, I am shooting factory rounds at $2 each. The chamber is big and very rough from all the rust and extraction is a little stiff, but I think I ...

I find it easier to cast GOOD bullets when they are smaller. I use a bottom pour furnace, and have no problems with casting 25-20 bullets. When I cast the bigger stuff I have to crank up the heat and I make plenty of bad bullets before the mould heats up and starts making good ones.

Trimming the barrel, squaring up the end and crowning, and cutting new dovetail will take at least an hour.
