What type of grip do you prefer and why
So on something like a marlin do you prefer a straight grip or a pistol grip and why?
Re: What type of grip do you prefer and why
I own 25 Marlin lever actions at this time and of those 25 one is a 45-70 and the rest are 444's .
The 45-70 has a straight grip and of the 444's eight are pistol gripped and the other sixteen are straight gripped .
And to be honest they all feel good to me !

Like 6pt-sika , I like both. Unlike some people who claim to hate one or the other. I think they both have their points.
I prefer pistol grip for hunting and straight grip for good looks and style in a fun gun.

Re: What type of grip do you prefer and why
I prefer the straight grip while hunting as in my opinion, they are quicker to get into action and easier to carry.
For offhand shooting, taking your time, a pistol grip gives more control such as in silhouette shooting.
For buying an original pre-war Winchester, I prefer a pistol grip when the seller thinks they are worth the same as a straight stock. Sometimes the difference can be $5,000 or more. ----------------------Sixgun

My big 'ol paws don't fit well in the pistol grips.

Re: What type of grip do you prefer and why
After 30 years of powerlifting, I have lost a bit of wrist flexibility. Therefore the pistol grips are MUCH more comfortable. However, I bet less than 10% of my leverguns have pistol grips....

I like both. I may give the slight edge to the pistol grip for comfort, but not by much. I like the looks of a straight stock better.

Re: What type of grip do you prefer and why
I'm more of a straight grip guy but the pistol grips sometimes do seem a little more comfortable depending on the gun. I was playing around with a pair of marlin 1895s, one with a pistol grip one without and both felt good, although the straight looks good. They would both look better without the cheesy checkering, JMO though.

Re: What type of grip do you prefer and why
I can get used to either one, but except for my Model 71 Winchester, all of my leveractions are straight grip, that I own now, so I recond I am more used to straight grips, anymore.

Pistol grip. I'm just used to most all my other shotguns and bolt actions having pistol grips.

Pistol grip - much more comfortable. On the other hand Tracy clearly prefers the straight grip.
I think Pat is also going with the straight grip.
I am staying out of the way!

Yup, mostly pistols.
Re: What type of grip do you prefer and why
My lever guns now are all straight grip. Not so with other guns. I guess I'm a traditionalist.

Pistol grips are a little like fender skirts on a '57 Chevy.....

I think it depends on what angle your wrist is most comfortable.

It's kinda the same with shotguns !
I shot pistol gripped O/U's at trap and skeet . And when I bird hunted I used a lot of straight gripped SxS's as well as PG guns .

Over the years I've found it fairly true that if a person has good hand to eye coordination stocks , grips , barrel configurations etc are not as big a deal as some folks would like one to believe .

Re: What type of grip do you prefer and why
All my levers are straight. I like the looks. I don't much care one way or the other when it comes to shooting them whether straight or pistol, both are fun and easy to shoot.
Kind regards,

OS...you're kill'n me...I think that I caught the drift regarding Tracy and Pat's preference of grip position.
Specifically to leverguns, I prefer the straight grip for carrying and the pistol grip for sitting.

Re: What type of grip do you prefer and why
I don't prefer one over the other. And I tend to hold them in the same fashion... my fingers under the bottom and my thumb over the top. But to be total accurate, about, we're talkin' "Semi-" pistol grips here... True PGs are... well... not as nice... But I do like 'em on... well... pistols!
Now as to semi-pistol grips; I enjoy them, as I tend to like curves... yet, the straight grip are just as functional.

Re: What type of grip do you prefer and why
I have always been a straight grip guy. To me they look much better. I do have a terrible secret when it comes to straight grip Marlins though. One day I was spending the night at a relatives house and as I was getting ready to go to bed I noticed a Marlin lever gun leaned in the corner of the bedroom I was using.
Of course I had to examine it. It turned out to be nothing special. Just a 336C pistol grip carbine. I did note how the pistol grip was very comfortable and created a geometry that put my trigger finger on the trigger just right. Kind of like an M1 carbine, Garand, or Winchester lever does.
When I got home a few days later I got out my straight grip gun and I have to admit it doesn't feel as good. I have to put my finger on the trigger where I want it and then wrap my hand around the stock and let that determine how I hold the gun. If I hold it the way I want to I have way too much finger on the trigger. For some reason my Winchester 94 carbine with a straight stock puts my finger on the trigger just right if I hold it the way I want to.
So as much as I love a Marlin straight grip gun I have to admit the pistol grip version has a lot going for it.

Re: What type of grip do you prefer and why
For aesthetics on a lever gun, I would have to say that I prefer the straight grip. However, I do find the pistol grip is more comfortable to shoot with the heavier recoiling rounds.
Re: What type of grip do you prefer and why
I only have 3 Marlins , two pistol grip and one straight grip.
I have no preference for the hunting I do , it wouldn't bother me if the 2 and 1 were switched.

Re: What type of grip do you prefer and why
Out of seventeen levers three of mine have a pistol grip stock.
Of my two Marlin 45-70's one is straight one pistol grip, with heavy loads I find the pistol grip more comfortable to shoot.
My daughter has a hard time shooting straight grips as she has a wrist & neck problem, however she is very comfortable with the pistol grips.
Overall I prefer the straight grip looks, but can live with either
