Re: Straight Wall 92's ; Browning B92 44mag
A lot depends on what load you use. With factory loads, they feed fine. With Keith design bullets they can be (some not all) sketchy on feeding. With the other designs and jacketed bullets they seem to feed fine. As to recoil, that depend on powder charge and bullet weight. I had a hunting load of 2...

Re: Paco sent this to me years ago
I use my "nasty nose" on CCI Stingers and load them into my model 18 for rattlesnakes. It is sighted in for three to five yards using a .410 hull as a target. My model 17 is carried for game and is sighted in for 25 yards. I use the cup point or flat point to bump them up a little to fit t...

Re: Win 94's in 444 marlin- heavy loads
I had some Leverevolution ammunition given to me with some rifles so that is what I shot. That seem to be a good match as my big bore 94 is a Timber Carbine with an eighteen and a half inch barrel. It seems a lot lighter than my Marlin 444 rifles so I decided to keep it for Ranch duties where I woul...

Re: Carrying a big sixgun.
I favor a cross draw for most handguns, but carry both cross draw and hip holster designs. I have a couple of chest holster designs, but use them only for 1911s. I favor a steeper angle than most commercial rigs are cut to, so will most likely make my own cross draw holsters in the future. I use the...

Re: I'm Gonna- dedicated to all those who are thinking of hunting with a handgun
I agree, when I was finally to the point in my life where I had disposable income, I made it my mission to buy the equipment I needed to reload. Then to buy the guns I had long wanted to own. My intent was to hunt every day possible during hunting season. All the time in between seasons was spent sh...

Re: heaviest big game bullets in 44mag
I no longer have the Bowen Redhawk. I gifted it to my nephew. He is young enough to still see the sights. I have a hard time with my old eyes now days. I still have some custom 44s but I mainly use scoped rifles for hunting. I will always keep some handguns and shotguns, but for hunting game it is s...

Re: heaviest big game bullets in 44mag
I was using 680 for my revolvers. It was a Bowen built Redhawk with a Dan Wesson shroud over a Douglas barrel. The case did not have a lot of room for powder so it was not a problem with over loading that powder using a bullet that size. It was pleasant to shoot and would penetrate way more than I h...

Re: heaviest big game bullets in 44mag
I was once a heavy for the caliber devotee. I had a 378 grn Keith I loaded for my revolvers and a 405 gn swc for the rifles. I read an article by Glen Fryxell on a bullet he designed for his 444 TC Contender and was inspired to try to design one for myself. I ended up with a 290 grn swc that was sho...

Re: Javelina in 2025
I was hunting deep south Texas with a buddy. We were up early hunting cottontails and I looked up and there was a Javelina standing on the trail that crossed the one I was on. He immediately took off giving me only a momentary snap shot with the Browning Challenger .22 pistol I was using. I just thr...

Re: Ever see a mold like this
I have a NEI two cavity that was sold to me as a 44 keithstyle mold. I cast up some bullets and when I went to size them I found out one was 44 and one was 45. I got rid of all my 45 caliber guns when I chose 44 for my centerfire revolver choice. I still have the mold somewhere.

Re: Favorite/Least Favorite to Reload/Most Reloaded Cartridges
About equal between the 44 magnum and 44 special. Would load more 44 Russian if I had the other cylinder done for my Colt SAA. Also use 44 magnum in rifles. For rifles I like the 444 Marlin. I have an 06 and 300 RM each in 700 Remington I enjoy loading for when I do that, but don't shoot them as muc...

Re: Specials and magnums
Magnum brass loaded with 240gn bullets and enough powder to give 900 fps will have a lot less recoil than a "magnum" load. I would suggest you add some dacron filler to keep the powder back against the primer for more uniform shot to shot performance. Check your loading manual for a powder...

Re: Taylor Throating: for an old 58 Rem. replica
Let me begin by saying I am not a gunsmith nor have I played one on TV. I use my tools on personal guns that I personally own. The forcing cone is the taper, cut at the rearmost part of the barrel by the factory. It is usually five to eight degrees depending on the revolver. I re-cut mine to eleven ...

Re: Taylor Throating: for an old 58 Rem. replica
This discussion was going good until Hawkeye 2 posted his definitive statement that Taylor throating was a forcing cone. It was said in such a matter-of-fact way it sounded like he knew exactly what he was talking about. I cut forcing cones and I have a Taylor throating reamer. I also remember when ...

Re: What happens if 2 of 3 Presidential Candidates are out?
Being from Texas, one of my Senators is Ted Cruz. A lot of mud is being slung at him, but he seems to be someone who will fight for the issues most people want addressed. No candidate is perfect. We are all human beings. I have written him for his support on some bills and against others over a wide...

Re: Firearms as a business expense?
See an accountant but I believe they will say you could write off the depreciation for X number of years (5-10) After which you could buy new ones and start depreciating them. Like a shop owner does with a fleet of vehicles. If you have an entity set up to do it, you buy them for the entity and the ...

We had one get into the attic and would run across the ceiling. Drove my wife into a frenzy. I used a have-a-heart trap. I knew he could pack all the food he needed for a long stay, but not water. Water is the key. I wired the door open and put a bowel of fresh water in there daily. After three days...

Re: "Only accurate rifles are interesting"
I do not see how there is a difference between the two. You say it isn't the twist rate, it is the rpm. In a short pistol cartridge rifle like the 1894 Marlin 44 magnum, If we want rpm we have to get the fps high enough to produce the rpm in a 1/38 barrel. That takes plenty of space in the cartridge...

I set up my bench rest arbor press for the tool and it turns out a box of modified ammo in short order with no "BANGING". I use a Wilson base made for depriming center fire cases. These can be adjusted to just the right handle throw to get consistant pressure on noses for diameter and shap...
