I usually start women who haven't grown up shooting with a good .22 ... revolver or semi-auto .. their choice. Let'em try a couple different ones and see what they like. I know of some places that armed their ladies with .22's and taught them to aim for the sinus cavities.
I didn't have a huge collection when my wife decided she need to carry a gun. She chose from those few and picked a Taurus model 65. While she is familiar with all of the firearms I have she stuck with that snubby until only a few years ago (although she still reaches for it quite often). I happen to pick up a Glock 42 (mostly because the state told me I couldn't have one). My wife really didn't like my other .380's because they were "too small". She took to the 42 like a duck to water and it's now her favorite carry gun. Since I lost "my" 42 I had to buy another.
So back on topic, do not try to chose a firearm for anyone. Offer choices if you can. If you can't take them to a range that can. Let the end user make the selection.

I am not sure it makes a lot of difference as far as convincing the individual receiving it that they should alter their behavior.
I took my wife to the gun store and let her try many guns. She picked a Colt Government 380. I figured as long as I was going to be loading for her's, I might as well get one for myself. She has had it many years now and wanted a second one for home. I let her use mine and bought some .45 1911s to carry for my ccw guns. I had nothing but 44 caliber centerfire guns for most of my life until antifa and blm started becoming a threat. I decided bottom feeders were faster to reload with their magazine feed system when out and about away from home.

I used to work behind the counter of a sporting good store, and always recommended revolvers for ladies not real familiar with guns.
I still do.
No slide to mess with, no safety to think about , just point and shoot, as long is a double action revolver.
A lot of ladies have problem working slides.
Same expereince working the hunting/gun department after retirement at Sportsman Warehouse oldebear. Heavy slide springs were a serious impediment to proper use of semi-autos by women until Smith came out with the EZ.
Oddly, New Mexico expressly forbids concealed carry of a .22 RF, but then it has been run by Democrats by something like 90 of the last 100 years.
