Re: Hornady 25-35 110 gr FTX

The first centerfire rifle I considered buying was an old 25-35 that was on the used rack...at Sears!

Re: Can you please educate me on the Winchester 38-40--thank

I had a 38 wcf 1889 marlin rifle for a number of years. Shot only one box of factory ammo (ultramax)...but reloaded hundreds of rounds using a 180 grain bullet of traditional profile cast 1 part tin to 20 parts lead. Considering the EXTREMELY bad bore it shot pretty well. With a full case of ffg it ...

Re: Marlin 1889 38-40 Love the old stuff!

What ammo were you using? I had very good luck with reloads,1/20 cast bullets, bp lube and black powder. could knock down a reduced size turkey steel at 75 yards off hand every time (if I did my part.)Sure was a fun gun...but was in MUCH worse shape than yours. Finally had to part with it. Sold it a...

Re: Vetran 1911 owners

My experience, years ago was with a Colt Combat Commander (steel frame), with a subdued nickel finsih (has some proprietary name I forget) This is back in the day where everyone shot ball..and the guns were reputed to be unreliable with anything but ball. 99% of what I shot were reloads...185 swc an...

Range Day Sunday...Marlin Pic!

Went to the range mostly to test a few loads for the 1895 Marlin. This gun used to be my brother's gun but he never liked the recoil...said it was the fault of my reloads. :D Shot two different loads of .458 speer 400 gr fn. 1100 = 1400 fps. Didn't photograph the targets. Not very impressive groups....

Re: Took the 128 year old 1873 out for a shoot...Ugh!

My 1889 Marlin 38-40 had a terrible bore...but not so bad as this one...shot well with black powder reloads and a 1/20 cat bullet.

Re: Seller & Bellot

I have used S&B in 7.62 X 39 (hundreds of rounds) and 9 mm Makarov (hundreds of rounds). Never a problem. However I I never reloaded their brass...although at one time I shot a lot of mixed 9 mm luger brass so there might have been some S&B moved in. Could just be a local gunshop "prefe...

Re: Care and feeding of a 1889 Marlin

I have an 1889 in .38 wcf..and it prefers black powder! Uses the original bullet design with no crimp groove..a full case of fff, magnum pistol primers. The bullet is 1/20 tin lead...bore looks horrible but the thing shoots!

used levers at the Kittery Trading Post

Every time I'm there I do an informal survey of the used Winchester 94s...very few are safe queens, more have been "rode hard etc" This time the unusual thing I noticed was the number of 38-55 caliber carbines (at least 5) and 32 specials (10+) Several of the 38-55's mounted tang sights an...

Re: OT- But gun related.....Black Talon 1, Possum 0

I live in a tight neighborhood...my wife objected to the possums getting into the trash and making a mess (we have secured the trash in various ways but to no avail...) so one rainy nite I waited in the shed with a single shot 22 rifle loaded with .22 Cb cap...18" barrel low velocity = little n...

...they are out there...you'll find one when you least expect it...as with my 1889...which is not very different from the 1894 "Design improvements to the Model 1889, such as a one-piece trigger and a two-piece firing pin to prevent the rifle from firing unless the finger lever was fully closed...

Thanks for all the interest...I talked to a gun dealer about the rifle...he wasn't concerned about the replacemnt brass screw (by the way its filled flat to the receiver...(originally domed?) so no screw driver slot!)...but he did ask if it was refinished...

38 WCF Loads in 1889 Marlin

My 1889 Marlin had a REALLY rough bore when I bought it ...so I didn't expect much for accuracy. I was pleased with my initial 50 yard group with the 38-40 Ultramax factory loads. (see target attached). Once I emptied the factory shells...I searched for some soft lead bullets (1/20 lead /tin ratio)....

Hi First post...I have a 1889 Marlin I purchased several years ago from my favorite gun shop...I was in for some other purpose..and noticed a ling slim rifle in the midst of sks's and mausers on the floor rack...an 1889 Marlin in 38-40 (actually its marked .38 w)..a little rough..wood is beat up/wea...
