If you could use a reamer to remove the bulk of the material and then switch to a flex hone and hone until just a hint of spiral remained, I think that would still be considered rifling and therefore legal. I also agree that he should try shooting with one eye shut; but to check for a flinch just leave one chamber empty in #3 or #4 position and see if he flinches on the empty chamber.
