Favorite bad guy?
I would have to vote for ... Morgan Woodward. He was almost a regular on Gunsmoke but played a good guy ( deputy 'Shotgun' on 'the life and times of Wyatt Earp. A very good actor.
Re: Favorite bad guy?
Broderick Crawford. While most remember him for "Highway Patrol" he played a heavy in quite a few westerns. And did a very good job of it. In fact when I started to watch Highway Patrol it seemed strange that a bad guy was now the head of the cops.

Re: Favorite bad guy?
Bruce Dern in The Cowboys was a guy you could really hate, but I think he's been pretty good in some other roles. He really abused John Wayne and scared the he__ __ out of the kid who dropped his glasses. But he got his just desserts in the end. Really made you want to cheer his demise.

For me without a doubt it's Leo Gordon. He played on so many Gunsmoke, Cheyenne, Bonanza and countless others. As soon as I see him I know he's the bad guy.

Bad guys begin and end with Bruce Dern and Rickman. Their built in sneer and attitude carry the day, you HAVE to hate 'em.

Re: Favorite bad guy?
For a short time I was a guard at Universal Studio`s back in late 1964, early 1965. I met Crawford and talked to him. Prior to that I didn't like him from Highway Patrol. He always was so overbearing. I was surprised, he was okay with me. He did have a reputation for drinking and was I suspect a little lit up when we talked. I asked him about the helicopter pilot he used on his series as he flew me on my first helicopter ride back in 1960 when I was a fire fighter in the NPS. He told me that he had dropped into a fire and got killed. That broke the ice and we got along.
One heavy that I seen throw a bad fit on the lot was Claude Akins. From what little I seen him misbehave I wanted nothing to do with him. Another "Bad actor" was Leo Gordon. Gordon did time for armed robbery in a bar during world war two off duty. He got shot in the stomach for his effort from one of the patrons in the bar and did time in San Quentin. So you might say he was the real deal.
What I did notice in the studio was other guards might say look out for so and so, I would meet them and get along with them and conversely some guards would like so and so and I might not. So you really cant go by what others think. Maybe you catch a good guy having a bad day or vice versa.
I heard a few bad story`s about Neville Brand`s behavior from another guard.

I thought Javier Bardem was a terrific bad guy in "No Country for Old Men" and "Skyfall".

Jack Palance. "Jack Palance exemplified evil incarnate on film -- portraying some of the most intensely despised villains witnessed in 50s westerns and melodrama."
Re: Favorite bad guy?
I would have to agree with the Rickman, Elam, and Palance votes for multiple roles. The best bad guy for one movie, in my opinion, was Andy Robinson (Scorpio) in the original Dirty Harry.

Man, there have been a lot of good "bad guys" over the years. But on a more recent note I'm thinking "The Swede" from "Hell on Wheels" is doing a heck of a job.

I agree with this for sure.
I was thinking more along the lines of western sitcoms/series of yesteryear where I always seemed to see the same guys and they were always playing bad guys.
Of course any of the new western movies would have some pretty bad guys just due to what they are allowed to show these days.

Another vote here for Jack Elam. Heck of a nice guy. He passed away at his home in Ashland, Oregon, a few years back. When I was a newspaper editor in Medford, my entertainment reporter, Al Reiss, used to play cards with Jack regularly. I told Al to tell Jack next time he saw him that I thought he absolutely carried all the mail in "Rio Lobo."
Jack was so tickled he sent me a nice note and his autograph.

Now that I think of it, there are not many on that show up for sainthood. "The Sons Of Anarchy" weren't up for Christians of the Year, either.

Rickman for sure. Eli Wallich, Lee Van Cleef, and Jack Palance. I liked Bruce Dern once upon a time... but after what he did to JW on The Cowboys, he makes the list. And yes, Chistopher Heyerdahl as "the Swede" on HoW needs a guttin' along with my favorite good "bad" guy, Ian McShane as Al Swearengen on Deadwood! He seems to out-evil the bad guys on that show... even when doin' it is good!

I would agree 100 percent. I was looking down the list of the bad guys and was also thinking of Lee Van Cleef and there he was.... All the other ones mentioned were also really good at being bad guys.J Miller wrote:Lee Van Cleef { http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001812/?ref_=nv_sr_1 }

P.S. I just watched the documentary on PBS about Leopold and Loeb, the young guys that killed Tommy Franks in the 1920's. They would make the cowboys look like choir boys. Talk about evil.......

Question. Was Elliot Marston, as played by Rickman a bad guy? Or since what the character was doing, at the time he was supposed to be doing it, acceptable behavior, is he a good guy made bad by revisionist history? In fact considering the time and place of the movie, isn't Selleck's Quigley really the bad guy?BlaineG wrote:Hans Gruber/Elliot Marston and many others played by Rickman.
