i keep a puma 454 carbine loaded and ready near the side entrance to the house for moose or bear incidents, and for that matter there is a 45 colt ruger with 300 gr heavy loads, and a 44 special there as well.
the 44 does dog walking duty every am.

i think the best result might be had by using a stout brass 410 2 1/2' case, with a heeled bullet that was soft enough but fit the grooves really well. i plan to try it, someday [sigh] if i ever get time; i have the cases, but not the mould.

it is 24" and i think they shortened it to get rid of the front magazine dovetail, and also because the pictures from madis winchester book that i asked them to copy were this lenght. it balances superbly!

i just use ffg powder or 777 and the little brass cartridge inserts [ used more for target shooting] i beleive hold about 20-25 gr? and the rubber gasket like cartridges maybe 40-50 gr. i think it would be possible to lengthen the chamber area and use more powder but i dont know if this would be adv...

in my contender such loads all shot sideways...keyholing every time. i havent tried it since, but also think that using a longer case, ie a 2 1/2" 410 brass case, would put the bullet closer to the rifling, less jump, and so maybe more accurate. havent gotten around to this with my other projec...

i dont beleive the recoil in a 25/20 would set off a mouse's butt much less a primer, but on the other hand this is not the strongest rifle anyway, and with proper, safe loads i dont think you would gain anything ballistically by using pointy bullets.

we only have the nearly extinct arctic python, which is white and has scales that resemble the fur on a polar bear; they are very hard to see in the snow.
