Deer season
Deer gun season starts here in Kentucky this Saturday. I went and checked the scope on my Marlin 336 and set the newly installed tang sight on my 90 year old Winchester 94. The Marlin in 30-30 was still shooting well and the Winchester shot well but... I don't remember any other gun doing this but t...

I must have got an oddball set from Brownells. My bits are so hard I've snapped most them off on tight screws. I like the selection but have not liked how hard the bits are. I never tried getting replacements because I figured the new ones would be just as hard.

Most of the banded horns have the bands added. There are a few with the bands carved from the horn its self. I cut rings from a horn and heat them to slide onto a cone shaped piece of wood. I then put the wood cone in the centers of a wood lathe and turn them to shape. Sometimes I use wood pegs to s...

I'm left handed but hate making left handed flinters. You can't get a good left handed lock from anyone. They all need work either inside or out and sometimes both. I guess right handed people can't make things backwards even the ones assemblers in the south can't make em backwards. Go figure.

The barrel is "swamped" which means it tapers down from the breech to a waist the tapers out larger again at the muzzle. This barrel is 15/16" at the breech and I think 3/4" at the waist and 7/8" at the muzzle. Once you own a rifle with a swamped barrel you never want a stra...

I owned a Win 94 in 32-40 it had a flat top adjustable sight and it shot high at the lowest setting. I took the elevator out of the sight and then it shot where I aimed. A good pile of charcoal with the part on top will anneal it. Light the charcoal and let it burn out and cool. Usually about twelve hours. I've used this technique before and it works well. Its easy to check afterwards, just run a file along a spot to see it skates or digs in.

I've used Goex ffg for 45-60 and it was bad for fouling. I had to clean the barrel after every third shot. That said it could have been the bullet and not enough lube. You really need lots of lube shooting BP and if the bullet is designed for smokeless it usually has shallow grooves. Good lube keeps...

Ed Rayl makes .25 barrels which is about a .22 once you add a patch. Most guys use ffffg for the main charge instead of fffg. The biggest problem with that small of a round ball is the wind effects. Doesn't take much to cause it to drift.
