Heard some bad news about gunpowder
Stopped at my local reloading store today and picked up some primers. While I was there the owner said he had a visit from the FBI and was ask a thousand questions about Unique powder that he had for sale. He ask why and the agent said that our wonderful leadership is trying to outlaw double based powders and Unique was one they were really going after. His partner said he heard another agent on TV say that they are going after black powder also. If black powder is outlawed I'll be looking for another job. Has anyone else heard anything about this garbage?

Re: Heard some bad news about gunpowder
Sounds like hysteria to me. I have some immediate questions:
1) Why would the FBI go to a local gunstore to get information about gunpowder? They already know everything about it.
2) FBI? Not ATF? Suspicious to me. Of course, with the recent bombings, I am sure everyone is running around looking for anyone who bought more than a couple of bottles of gunpowder, so maybe the ATF needs help with the leg work.
3) So, I have met a few cops and a couple of federal agents, and first thing I notice is that they are reticent to answer questions directly. They prefer to ask questions. An FBI agent volunteering information that the government is about to ban certain powders?
4) A buddy "heard" an "agent" saying they were going to ban black powder? I heard they were going to ban all .22 ammo a few years back. Remember that?
This sounds like the usual fear mongering and scare tactics to me. You notice that Obama is almost out of office, and nope, he didn't take the guns away. Can't even pass the laws he wants to, much less the ones he definitely doesn't want to get involved with.
What part of the country is this gun store in? IF an agent went in there at all asking about Unique powder specifically, AND it was an official visit, and not just personal interest, then it's more likely the FBI is trying to gather info specific to the recent bombings and the possibility of using gunpowder as an explosive in IEDs.
That's my two cents. Put me down in the "Fah, whatever" column.

Re: Heard some bad news about gunpowder
I wonder if this is a variation on the theme of them trying to change the status of gunpowder manufacturing components that came up recently and they decided to put it off,
"Far better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs even though checkered by failure, than to rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy nor suffer much because they live in the gray twilight that knows neither victory nor defeat." -Theodore Roosevelt-

Perhaps an offshoot rumor/fairy tale about the proposed reclassification of "wetted nitrocellulose"?

This is central KY. I'm pretty sure this guy knows a federal agent also. He says he gets visits every so often from the feds to check his full auto and tax stamp collection. I don't know maybe he knows this guy from somewhere. I didn't have time to get the novel version just the short story.

That's Ok! Gun powder, like primers, bullets, brass, and the guns they are used in are better than any 401K plan......or any so called "protection" plan that the gov says they will do.----6

Re: Heard some bad news about gunpowder
Here is how the hype works. Note above. 8/31/2016. That same day, the NRA announced this:model55 wrote:http://conservative-daily.com/2016/08/3 ... -ammo-ban/
https://www.nraila.org/articles/2016083 ... regulation
So the real story is - The NRA successful argued that the change was burdensome, the ATF listened, and now the change is on hold. However, that doesn't help anyone trying to drum up contributions, so the first story is what is being hyped. "Technically" true, earlier this summer the ATF did just change the rules, but notice the conservative daily only delivers the side of the story it wants, not the actual story that the change is on hold. Notice also, the conservative-daily story contains no links to the ATF action, whereas the NRA publication links to the actual ATF documents.
Perhaps the agent visiting the gunshop was part of the industry outreach to gauge the effect the policy would have.
My understanding is that actual blackpowder is classified as an explosive and requires additional rules for transport and storage. If they do that for gunpowder, it would probably go along the same lines, which would suck, but not be insurmountable.
Re: Heard some bad news about gunpowder
We just hope for the best.Have had to sign for black-powder in the past, not a big deal yet.
Re: Heard some bad news about gunpowder
I emailed a gentleman that works for Hodgdon to see what he could tell me. He told me he hasn't heard about any changes coming from D.C. So it looks like its just rumors. Sorry guys. Shouldn't have opened my trap before I checked out my info more.
Re: Heard some bad news about gunpowder
No offence to anyone, but we really should stop spreading rumors, especially about our firearms related lives. I don't think I'm the odd man out here and there are others that tire of "I heard..." bad news about guns and all associated with them as 99% are just rumors. When a rumor deals with a new law the info is available somewhere online and a couple good places to start are Snopes and Factcheck. If there is any basis to the rumor facts will be easy to find and can be shared on a forum (but also include the source of your info, not "Bubba's cousin's parole officer's son said..."). Next time someone tells you "I heard that..." check it out rather than add to the BS by posting "Hey, have you heard..." questions in forums mainly because some reader will go to a friend or other forum with "I heard..." and the rumor just grows...

Re: Heard some bad news about gunpowder
I don't see this as a rumor at all. We have experienced ammo shortages and record gun sales following the last two elections. Why should this election be any different? Especially if Hillary gets in! .22LR is just now making it back on the shelves with regularity. Pipe bombs and pressure cooker bombs are more frequent with the domestic terrorism today. I suspect politicians and ATF will be building a bigger loop and reloading will be included in future gun control efforts.

Re: Heard some bad news about gunpowder
Rumor. Just checked the NRA-ILA (Institute for Legislative Action) web page and could find nothing about this in the menu and ammunition issues sections.
For those not familiar with the NRA-ILA: https://www.nraila.org/
Now just maybe this gun shop has more information than the NRA-ILA? Or, start a rumor to increase reloading component sales?....

Random House College Dictionary definition of Rumor; a story or statement in general circulation without confirmation. Gossip, hearsay.horsesoldier03 wrote:I don't see this as a rumor at all. No offence soldier, but do you have any facts/confirmation on the original post? If not it's just an "I heard..." story/tale. You have given examples of what has happened in the past, which are easily proved as fact (ammo shortages, caused by us panic/over buying) and speculation of what may occur in the future if certain events occur (hilLIARy elected). The original post had no facts, no confirmation, thus a rumor/gossip.
Thanks Ray for the confirmation...

Re: Heard some bad news about gunpowder
I appreciate your clarification of RUMORS, however, it has not changed my opinion. The man made a comment about a conversation at the gun store. He never swore it as gospel and I for one, took it pretty much as just that, a tongue in check comment! I have serious doubt that the discussion of the topic will incite a gun industry panic. Just so you are tracking, SNOPES has pretty much proven itself as politically biased (pro democrat) as the other media sources these days, so probably not the best place to go looking for the truth.mikld wrote:No offence to anyone, but we really should stop spreading rumors, especially about our firearms related lives. Re: Heard some bad news about gunpowder
Ever think that much of the hoarding of recent years is due to unfounded paranoia generated by unsubstantiated rumors? In many ways we are our own worst enemies. Overall opinions expressed on the internet are worth approximately what we paid for them. When someone rejects a WIKI article out of hand without any evidence to the contrary and defers to internet gossip we are in trouble. Any one who doubts that needs only to read the 'COMMENTS' section of any news article. The majority of the commenters don't have enough sense to be send out alone without a babysitter.
