A couple of Browning 1895 questsions

Howdy all, I need a little help with two totally unrelated things.

Number one: what the heck is this dingus?
Number two: is there a decent manual that covers dis-assembly of one of these beasts?

Re: What are you shavin with?

Merkur safety razor; shaves better than any modern fancy razor I've ever tried. It's also pleases my sense of aesthetics. It's made of chromed steel in Germany, not plastic pooped out of a machine in China.

Re: Marlin 94 cowboy - hot (ish) loads

Two bullets from opposite sides of the spectrum that have worked well in my Winchester trapper:

Barnes XPB 250gr (made for the 454 Casull)

Speer #4684, cheaper than fill dirt and shoots better than most boutique bullets I've tried.

I run both of these with warmish loads of 296/H110.

I've not shot a K frame, but I'm totally pleased with the Ahrend's grips on my N frame.

Re: Question for Winchester 1895 owners with Redfield sights

Thanks Mike. It's good to hear from someone with an original. On mine, with the elevation wound all the way down, the base of the windage adjuster hits the receiver just to the right of the bolt. This leaves approximately "1/8 between the top of the bolt and the bottom off the sight arm. Is thi...

Question for Winchester 1895 owners with Redfield sights

Does your windage knob clear the receiver on the right side?

I've picked up a 70D, for my Browning 1895, and it looks like the windage knob will hit the receiver before it runs out of adjustment. Is this they way it's supposed to be, or do I maybe have a frankensight?

Thanks.

Redfield for a Brownchester 1895

I've seen original 1895s with Redfield receiver sights, but haven't been able to figure out which model(s). If someone could point me in the right direction, it would be appreciated. Thanks.

Re: OT - . 44 Pistol Home Defense Loading

I may be telling you what you already know. But, Speer makes a .44 Special specific Gold Dot; #4427. Supposed to give more reliable expansion at .44 Special velocities.

I use those, driven by a warmish load of Unique in my HD gun.

Re: OT: .45 Colt Loads

Not that I have any practical experience; but my choice for an "off the shelf" defense round is the CCI Blazer. They use the 200gr Gold Dot. Per CCI's web site Bullet Test Barrel Velocity, ft/sec Energy, ft-lbs Trajectory (25 yd sight-in), inches* Caliber Part # Wt, (grs) Type Length (inch...

Hi everyone. I'm looking for some feedback on David Chicoine (oldwestgunsmith.com). Seems to know his old S&W. Have any forum members had work done by him?

My father used to load hollow base wadcutters backwards in his .44 Redhawk. I was pretty young at the time so I don't remember much except they mostly hit the paper sidways at 15yds and were accompanied by a 12" muzzle blast. I don't think being hit by one would be pleasant.

(lever) Gunsmiths: who do you LIKE and for what?

Ok, I'll admit my motivations for creating this thread are entirely selfish. I'm now the proud owner of a "26 38-55 barrel. However, it doesn't do me much good without a rifle attached to it. In searching the previous threads for gunsmiths, it occured to me there should be one for people to giv...

Re: OT - Gunsamerica on UFC; NOT our best advocate

This however, while potentially profitable for GunsAmerica.com, only adds to the characterizations and stereotypes we constantly defend against [violent neanderthals, etc.] Am I wrong on this? I wouldn't say wrong, maybe just uninformed. Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) is simply new and doesn't have the c...

Winchester 38-55 conversion questions

So, I was thinking about how to spend my tax refund and I figure a 38-55 might fit the bill. I'd like to take something like a Sears Ted Stevens 30-30 and have it relined or rebarreled. The questions I have are -could you load to 30-30 pressures in a relined 30-30? -if you can, does the same hold tr...

Barnes are all copper. Apparently they're stickier(?) going down the bore than jacketed or lead. They also recommend seating .03-.07 off the lands for the same reason.

Help with Barnes .45 Colt load for 94 AE

I just got box of 250gr XPBs for my 94 AE. Unfortunately being built for the .454 Barnes never did any load development for the Colt. The best guidance they could give me was to expect a 10% bump in pressure. Does anyone have any general guidance for developing loads for Barnes bullets? Given what t...

Not really any purpose to it, but a 256 Win Mag would be fun. What I'd really like to see is another run of 375 Win. Prices on the existing ones seem to be taking off.
