Whats your favorite caliber thats not in a lever gun yet ?

Post by dgr416 »

This is a hard one for me.I think the caliber I want the most is not in a lever gun but could be easy in a custom gun.I would love to have a 260 Remington in a Browning Blr or a Winchester Model 88.I had a 250-3000 that I loved the gun but it would not shoot any bullets above 90 grs .I had a bunch of 25-35s but the last ones made were not real Winchesters to me too many add ons.I think a little 260 Remington would be an awesome lever gun.Its flat shooting and easy on the shoulders. The other calibers I would like to see in a BLR a 338 win mag and a 264 win mag.I guess I like different guns than the norm.I also forgot I still want a good lever gun in 357 Remington Maxium.

Every caliber I like either is, or has been chambered in lever action rifles.

Springfield Scout - 7.62x51mm
AK47 - 7.62x39mm
AR15 - 5.56x45mm

In that order. I'm in a homeland security state of mind.

500 S&W Magnum in a Trapper-sized carbine with full length mag tube. I'm still waiting on reloading data for this round using rifle powders. Using pistol powder (H110) and the 400gr Sierra JFP in a H&R HandiRifle this season, I clobbered a 140lb whitetail doe at 110yds. Hit through both lungs, she made about three lunges and crashed. A bloodtrail that Mr. Magoo could follow and absolutely no wasted meat! A little lever in this caliber would be a serious deer rifle in the piney woods!

I;ll second the 357 super mag, but also add the 445 super mag and the 500 S&W. Would prefer the 445 super mag first, then 357 then 500

I think the S&W 460 would be a much better shooting
cartridge than the S&W 500. PRIMARILY because
they would make it so you could load and shoot
interchangeably 454 Casull and 45 Long Colts in it.

Imagine a 45 Long Rifle, Long and Short Lever action.

Yes but the Ruger 96 would be COOL, they could probably use the same mag as the model 77/22 Hornet and it would be a lot cheaper than the excellent No1.

A better 25 caliber in a marlin something close to the 250 savage. There is no small caliber leverguns available right now.

Yes - THAT would be cool beans! I don't see why it would be that hard for Marlin to just scale up their receiver 10% or so to allow proper thickness barrel/chamber - they already have a design that works! Same for Winchester/Puma, etc.

I'd also like to see that little .327 Magnum in a very light carbine.

How about 9x18 Makarov? It'd be cheap to shoot, and real
easy on the shoulder.

I like txpete's suggestion of 7.62x39. Hard to believe somebody
hasn't already done that. Ammo's available on any continent....... :)

The Jet and .327 Fed Mag sound intriguing as well. Maybe add 5.45x39 to the mix. :P

I actually did inquire with several layers of Marlin Management
about the possibility of doing the S&W 460 with the interchangeable
power levels of the 454 and the 45 colt and they said their
current 1895 design could not handle the magnum pressures.

The said the 454 Casull pressure level is beyond extreme and
the 460 was overwhelming and not doable.

I think we should bug Browning for a 260 and a run of 264s

Post by dgr416 »

I think we should all bug Browning for a run of 260 Remingtons,265 winchesters and 338 win mag.I know if they made a run of 1000 in each caliber they would sell out quick.I would like a light weight 260 Remington for deer .I would love a medium heavy barreled 264 win mag and a medium heavy stainless 338 win mag.The 264 is awesome but needs a 26" barrel to beat the 7 mm rem mag.The 338 Win mag BLR would sell like hotcakes in Alaska.I even think the 375 Ruger if it would handle it with a stronger stock but thats pushing it.I am waiting for Ruger to bring out the 416 Ruger as a factory round so I can build one.I wish I had a lever gun in that caliber too a new improved Big Medicine gun.

I would not mind seeing a Marlin levergun in 28ga built along the same lines as their 410 from a few years back. A 16" barrled 1894 in 45 acp would be pretty cool as well.

.357 Special Magnum - see the link!
Nearly .357 Maximum performance from a case barely longer than .357 Magnum... Interestingly close to the .351 WSL as far as case capacity, but use in a stronger gun would likely explain it's better performance.

.357 Special Magnum - http://ammoguide.com/?catid=247

.357 Magnum - http://ammoguide.com/?catid=37
.357 Remington Maximum - http://ammoguide.com/?catid=66
.351 Winchester Self-Loading - http://ammoguide.com/?catid=70

Or... maybe the oddball .35-53R - http://ammoguide.com/?catid=300 -
.35 Winchester size case but about the length of a .35 Remington...
