Gun show 1893 Deluxe

Post by marlinman93 »

Had our monthly OAC collector gun show Sunday and a friend asked me to look at an 1893 on a table for sale. I looked at a pretty tired old Deluxe rifle with a broken 336 buttstock barely hanging on it. String wrapped around the wrist, and the sides of the wrist spread open from some previous misuse. Whole gun was brown and dirty, but all there except for a couple screws. Action wouldn't open, and hammer only went to half cock. I told my friend it was likely pieces of broken stock jamming up the action, and might just need cleaning. Of course the buttstock would also need replacing. Seller wanted $100 and my buddy passed. I told him I'd buy it and part it out, and he told me to go ahead. Seller wasn't there, but his wife pointed him out, and I took the 1893 over to him and asked if he had any room on his price. He said he'd take $80 so I bought it.
Tore it apart today and sure enough a broken chunk of wood was under the hammer. Also the mainspring was off center and had swung to one side stopping the action. I removed the wood, and centered the spring and it functioned fine. I tore it down to it's basic parts, which wasn't easy as it looked like it had never been apart, and fought me. But all the screws came out without any breaking, so no big deal. Forearm cap screw was missing, as was the ejector. I had both those parts, so an easy fix.
I cleaned and oiled everything, and went after the surface with 4/0 steel wool and a rag, and all the brownish rusty color came off. Not much finish, but the barrel looks more blue than before. Put it all together with the new ejector, and it functions like new. Bore is very nice, and it's a 20" half octagon barrel in .30-30. Just need to find or build a buttstock for it and it's ready to see how it shoots!

Our Fordwannabe here had a connection for semi inlet stocks, I know because he talked me into inletting and shaping it for his 36.

Gunville only show straight grip stocks, no pistol grip.

I found a person who has an original Marlin pistol grip stock that's "A" checkered, but he doesn't know for which model? 1893 and 1894 take the same stocks, but the 1895 is larger at the tangs and takes a different stock. I've asked him to send me pictures, and measure the top tang length so I can determine which it's for. This may have just become a very quick, and easy fix if the stock is right, and not too crazy priced.
