Tore it apart today and sure enough a broken chunk of wood was under the hammer. Also the mainspring was off center and had swung to one side stopping the action. I removed the wood, and centered the spring and it functioned fine. I tore it down to it's basic parts, which wasn't easy as it looked like it had never been apart, and fought me. But all the screws came out without any breaking, so no big deal. Forearm cap screw was missing, as was the ejector. I had both those parts, so an easy fix.
I cleaned and oiled everything, and went after the surface with 4/0 steel wool and a rag, and all the brownish rusty color came off. Not much finish, but the barrel looks more blue than before. Put it all together with the new ejector, and it functions like new. Bore is very nice, and it's a 20" half octagon barrel in .30-30. Just need to find or build a buttstock for it and it's ready to see how it shoots!
