Whatever....Bouncing marbles, or whatever they come up with are not making the music on a stick and string contraption. It's all computer generated.

So is a Moog. What's your point? How the electronic music is generated by the waveform device is not the issue. How those wave forms are actuated (by keys, strings or whatever) is.

How about digital music making analogue waveform images?

It's still art beyond most people's ken. (even when he gives full how-to instructions)

I can tell that what was built by Wintergaten is only functionally different from any other music-box/player piano in the way the "strings" are struck... or not struck as in this case:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JTnGI6Knw5Q

Pitch, duration, all math represented as the release of hammers/air/marbles.

 You're not "focusing" My one and only point was that the Marble Machine was supposed to look like actual wind and Percussion contraption... IE, air and sticks vibrating things to make sound. It's not. I don't and never did care for electronically produced music, except for the proper amplification of real woodwinds, brass, drums, pianos, organs (Tho I grudgingly admit that the Hammond B3 was a gift from the Music gods...)

THIS is what a true mechanically made "band" sounds and looks like. A few hundred thousand pipes, drums, whistles and actuators, and not one freaking microchip in the mix. (Also see player piano)

YesSir.....It could be OI and I are sort of kind of in agreement (don't tell him that :o )....It's a wonder of engineering, but it's still computer-generated sounds, not a "real" music box. Player Pianos and the old Carousel roll-actuated organs are the "real" thing. I don't like synthesized music. It's not real.

Blaine, what am I missing here? The Wintergatan machine uses percussion -- ball bearings physically falling on vibraphone keys and other surfaces -- to generate acoustical sound.

Now this one is "fake."

Actually, the two things above the vibraphone keys are microphones, not speakers.

The transducers under the "drums" are different than the transducers in an electric guitar nly in that they transmit sound from direct impact rather than vibrated air.

The Cymbals are... real cymbals being hit by steel marbles and the sound being sent to the mixer through yet another microphone.

All of the sound generated by the Marble Machine, save that of the drums, is generated by vibrating keys, cymbals or strings.

But... grasshoppers, you're both wrong, ALL music is computer generated. Without the bio-chemical computer God placed in the cranium of those gifted individuals that create the auditory patterns we call "music", none of the gifted people that make instruments, be they string, wind or silicone chip based to convert said patterns to auditory impulses, none of rest of us could enjoy these "patterns"!
