Or, use a "Cow's Knee" like shown on Glass' son's flintlock. Literally the hide removed from a cow's knee area, split at the front and would fit over the lock area of a rifle or fowling piece. I have a buddy who is a life long member of The American Mountain Men, and was one of the technical advisors on the movie "The Revenant".

Yes I have one but critters don't wait for it to be removed!
That's what I call hunting with the "fair chase method". Here in the states if you show up out in the woods with something that holds less than 20 rounds your considered obsolete.....not really, but you get the idea.
