Range day With the Savage 99

Post by 2ndovc »

Got to the range today with the new (1926) Savage 99H and a couple others.

Was one of those days that really made me appreciate living in Ohio.
75 and mostly sunny and very little humidity.
Had the whole place to myself!
Image

First up was the new 99 / 30-30. I'd shot it already offhand at cans and
chunks of firewood. Did well but wanted to know what she could do.

Image

I like to start a new gun with factory ammo if available to give me a starting point
with my handloads. Top target is winchester 170 Gr Power Points @ 50 yds.
After two sighters four rounds went into 1 1/8" .
Next up, just for fun was Hornady's LeverEv. 160 Gr Flex tips.
One, two and three are in a row 1 3/4" wide and then 3 & 4 open up to 2 1/4"

Image

Third target , lower left is Hornady 100 gr. Short Jacket and 8 gr. Unique.
Fun, light small game load that's very pleasant to shoot and don't have to change sight settings
at 50 +/-.
I'm sure the widening of the groups as the barrel heats up is due to the barrel clamp/ sling swivel but I like it so it's gong to stay.

Next up was Grandad's custom .257 Roberts built from a Japanese Arisaka
Great little carbine that always turns in great groups. 1" at 50 yds today.
It will do that at 100 if I'm doing my part.
Image

And my 94P / 44 Magnum.
Image

Have been wanting a heavier load for this little bugger.
Loaded up some 270 gr. Speer Gold Dot over 18.5 Gr. Win 296.
Got a two inch group with this load though the manual stated
load required a magnum primer. Since there were none to be found
i used a standard CCI Large Rifle.

After the session I dropped off the guns, put the top down and
headed off the largest gun/ sporting good shop I know of w/in an
hour's drive.

They had a few thousand of each in stock except magnums..
Oh well. Have to make another trip next week. Did buy 1k of Large
rifle and 1k large pistol. Limit was 2k per visit.

Days like these makes it worth puting up with the snow and the
cold (not that i mind anyway :D )

Jason,

Nice range report. I wouldn't mind having a Savage 99 in 30-30. Be kinda fun.

How do those 100gr Hornady HJ feed through a Win 94? I think I might wanna try some.

Oh, nice range too. Much nicer when you have it to yourself.

First time out for the 100 grainers.

JohnK/ w30wcf was talking about the .30 carbine bullets and 8 gr of Unique in another
thread so I thought I'd try these.
I bought them for a .30 Mauser Broomhandle I had once upon a time.
They shot better than anything else I'd come up with for that pistol.
Wish I'd kept it. Neat pistol. My problem is I start siffing "Profit" and
start selling things

Thanks Guys!!

One thing that I find interesting is that
all the other LeverEvolution ammo I've
fired has hit considerably higher, like 4"-6"!
This is my first box of the LE in 30-30. Shot only about
1/2" higher than the other loads I shot.

Just going to see what it ses at 100 :D

I'm not a Savage fan on looks, but yours has a nice bit of class to it.....maybe it's the age or the way the stocks were reshaped or both, but it is a classy looking rifle. Nice report and congrats!

That is one good looking Savage 99. You can shoot cast bullets through it and save a bunch of money. There are pointed cast bullets in the 165gr. range that will really surprise you. I shoot a 165cast over 4227 powder and the accuracy is fantastic. These are reduced loads but are very efficent and flat shooting. Cast bullets at 1600fps. will fool you up to 100 yards or so. You are also not beating up on the buttstock which may have a crack in it. ( these guns are famous for this problem) Have funnnn....

There's two of them for the dogs. One must have been in use.

Hecter,

I had just gone through all my cast loads the weekend before. 168 gr GCs and 8.5 of unique. Lots of fun!!
