Is that a take-down? Adds value but that one has had many modifications but I like it.

I had a chance to pick up a barreled action in 228 Ackley Improved, passed on it knowing those 228 bullets were hard to come by!

The takedowns are much more common than solid frames in 22 High Power. The .228" bullets can be tough to find but Buffalo Arms sometimes has them. I made a bump die that I use for making .224" Hornady 60 gr softpoints the right size. The Hornady .227" 70 gr. are longer than the factory bullets of old (and the ones loaded by S&B). Some rifles shoot them fine, some don't. I think they are on the hairy edge of being stabilized. I've had four High Powers over the years and they can be... finicky. I like the Model 99 and I like messing with cantankerous rifles but it would be worthwhile to read Ken Waters' thoughts on the cartridge in Pet Loads.

Pretty rifle.
The caliber is a little to unusual for me though.

That Model 1899 has a few demerits that would IMO reduce it's value from a $650+ collectible to a $350-$400 (+/-) shooter:

* D/T'd for scope mounts
* Recoil pad
* Inlays (custom features generally appeal only to the person who did, or had done, the customizing)
* Wood refinished
* Metal refinished
* Stocks drilled for sling swivels
* Unpopular chambering (currently)

On the positive side, it's still a Savage 1899; and if it's anything like my ca.1914 .303 Savage 1899, it should cycle as slick as a grass snake, & be plenty accurate to boot !

IIRC, in it's heyday, the .22HP was used to pop African Elephants, to show how powerful it was. :o
