Ysabel's armaments

Post by Ysabel Kid »

I was late to the game on Old No7's "Deadly Duo's" post (the 40th reply I think! ), here: http://www.levergunscommunity.com/viewt ... =1&t=67969, but it got me thinking about the picture I posted. Photobucket is giving me all sorts of fits (I know, I know - excuses, excuses), but I do need to post more photos because I know we all love them!

Here's the picture I posted again:

Image

The revolver is an Uberti reproduction of the Colt Model of 1849 Dragoon, a.k.a., the "Second Model Dragoon". It is a .44-caliber (actually, a .45 by dimension, but what the heck, that's what they called it) "cap & ball" (percussion) 6-shot black powder revolver - and the sidearm carried by "Loncey Dalton Ysabel", a.k.a., the "Ysabel Kid" (pronounced "sable"), in the J.T. Edson "Floating Outfit" western series.

His primary small arm though was his bowie knife. His had an ivory handle, but I thought the stag-handled one looked nice.

My photography skills are still no where near KirkD's (and never will be), but this is one of the better pictures I've taken. :D

More to come - I promise!

That's right neighborly to share like that.
I sold my only C&B to a good home (thanks, OI). If I get another it would be a quality Walker repro....

Nice pic. Don't see a Colt knife all that often, how old is it?

That is a really nice picture Kid. I should have posted that on Old no.7's thread cause I thought it then.
Classy stuff.

Not that old. I picked it up at "Smokey Mountain Knife Works" in Sevierville, TN (east of Knoxville). I used to go up to Knoxville 1-2 times a year for work, and always drove so I could stop by SMKW. It is an awesome store! I picked this one up a few years back. I think they still had them the last time I was by (April 2016). They are not overly expensive, so more for show than hard use.

Frequently. It is one of Y2K's favorites. I gave him my father's 1860 reproduction for Christmas this year, but I think he really wanted this one! He's going to have to wait awhile on it.

I like the Second Model the best of the Dragoon series. Partly because of my obsession with my literary hero, but also because I think it was the best of the Dragoon series. Colt himself preferred the Third Model. The difference between the two is the shape of the trigger guard, the Second Model having the "squared back" (a.k.a., "Dragoon-style") trigger guard and the Third Model having a round (oval) more "modern" trigger guard. I just think a Dragoon deserves a Dragoon-style trigger-guard, even if it is harder on the knuckles! :D

The Second Model is an improvement on the First Model, having rectangular cylinder stops versus the oval stops of the First Model and Walker Dragoon and transitional model. The Dragoon series improved on the Walker design by having a slightly smaller cylinder (the Walker's had a bad habit of being over-charged and blowing up), slightly shorter barrel, and a vastly-improved ram catch (the Walker's are notorious for the ram rod dropping under fire since the weak spring catch would often give, thus locking up the gun at very inopportune times! ).

That being said, I love them all. But the one I shoot is the Second Model!!! :D :D :D

See my response to Sixgun above. I love the Walker, but if I could only have one Dragoon-style C&B revolver (perish the thought), it would be the Second Model for the reasons I mentioned.

Blaine, to see the "dropping loading lever" in action, check out this video:

Don't get me wrong - I love my Walker. It is the first gun I ever bought on my own. I got it around 1983 at a gun show in Indianapolis for about $115. A steal (it was NIB). Clint Eastwood as the Outlaw Josey Wales wheeling a pair of these was just awesome. But again, if I could only have one Colt Dragoon-style cap & ball revolver, it would be the Second Model Dragoon. :D
