The barrel started out Sat. am like in the bottom picture... by Sun. pm it looked like the top! Throughout both had days we had several targets that ranged from 16"x24" buffalo silhouettes to 4" circles. Obviously at differing distances, from 25yards to 15 feet. Any misses were strictly due to me! Poppin' off shots when that derned front sight thingy was in hiding! Or... had green grass behind it, instead of white, black or red target steel!

Well dark or sooty doesn't mean they wont shoot well. Bad rifling, or leaded up surely means they wont shoot as well. I've had some bores on old guns that I thought needed a new liner, or new barrel when I bought them! After a thorough cleaning with a lead removal patch on a tight jag, they often look very nice!
Earlier this year I purchased a cheapo $14 bore scope off Ebay with a 15' cable. It's a 5mm, with LED lights, so it fits even my .22 bores. Simply plugs into my laptop and allows me to closely inspect every inch of my bore. I didn't expect much for $14 and free shipping, but was pleasantly surprised at how ell it works! It helps if I push a white patch in the bore with the camera lens. The white reflects the light and really enhances the picture.
I had trouble uploading this video to show the interim step, after looking down the barrel with just light from a light bulb, or a standard bore lite, (you know, those curved plastic thingies), I thought I'd plug in the bore scope and really take a look... my son said, save that as a video... so here it 'tis, warts and all!

Griff, which bore light and scope are you using? I meant to order one of the cheapies off Amazon a while back and forgot about it. Have a couple of bores that will not come clean with bronze brush, J.B. Paste, Wipeout Foam, Hoppe's, etc.

Ebay item, I think mine was only $11, but it's a 7mm. just plugs into the USB port and with the software, I can record both video and stills. Lights are LED and for such small suckers... quite bright. But, like Malamute sez, pushing a white patch thru will enhance the image quite a bit. Wish mine was a 5mm tho... I order one that said 5mm... but that was referring to the length of the cable!
The first one I ordered, never showed up... and even tho' it was coming from Ebay'r in China, they shipped another after allowing some time for mine to show up... Hmmm. maybe it's about time I order a 5mm one!!!

Remember, they are only clean for one shot. So at what number is the most accurate string and where is it the most consistent in accuracy the longest. I always hunt with a dirty barrel.

Inside the quote below is the link on the $14.00 5.5mm Bore Scope I had included in one of my posts from almost a year ago -- but if I recall, it was RoyB who lead us to these:
