My first made in 2015 Levergun!!

Post by vancelw »

This came to my FFL today :D All shiny and new. I am very pleased with fit and finish. Nice wood with satin finish. And no SILLY safety.
1873 Miroku WInchester 357 lg.jpg
Winchester labeled, made by Miroku. 357/.38 Special. 20" bbl
I ran home like a little kid at Christmas. Cleaned the bore and wiped it down, then loaded a mag full (10) and let her rip :D :D

I had to buy it to keep this company...
1866 Yellow Boy .45 Colt lg.jpg
Cimarron (by Uberti) 24" octagon bbl with case colored lever in .45 Colt. And it has .45 Colt on the barrel, not 45 LC.
I traded an old Tikka M595 Varmint rifle for it last week.

Ha! My FFL is a good friend. His son mans the store most of the time.
As I was filling out my paperwork, he was coon-fingering my new toy!
I made him quit...didn't want his nasty fingerprints all over it :D
He's so young (at 23) I had to tell him three times what the gun was, and I still don't think he understood.

So which action do you like better? The 66 or 73
30/30 Winchester: Not accurate enough fer varmints, barely adequate for small deer; BUT In a 10" to 14" barrelled pistol; is good for moose/elk to 200 yards; ground squirrels to 300 metres

Vance, nice snag. I did handle one last fall, and was impressed with the fit and finish. As you know, I'm not a big fan of imported guns but the Japs make the best of them.

Sure would be interested in groove diameter and how well it punches holes at 100 yards.---6

I love buying American when I can...but I also like quality no matter where it comes from. I got this from Bud's Guns.

I'm probably going to zero this at 100 yards. I don't have any shooting events near me so I just plink, hunt, and shoot varmints. So, I'm interested in seeing how she groups. It is D&T's for a tang sight, so if I can't do as well as I like with the open sights I may install a tang sight and see if I improve.

Right now, my range (back yard) is a swamp. We've had 3 weeks of snow, sleet, rain in various orders and I've made a mud canyon trail to the target. If the wind and sun will dry us out some I have lots of shooting to do. I'll try to get better pictures too. It's cloudy and misting today.

As far as liking the 66 or 73 better. I don't know yet. This 73 seems very smooth right out of the box. I've not shot my 66 much as I just traded for it last Sunday.

You do know how to enjoy retirement!
When you get that .357 broken in, we can take a turn at shooting each others' Winchester .357.
Mine is an old 1892 :

as hard as 22 ammo is to get that will be a sweet plinker even if you feel it's not a long range shooter.I don't see how you could go wrong.

I don't have any lead .38 Special ammo around right now. Yesterday I grabbed 5 rounds of 130 gr MC Remington and put it in the magazine tube. It all fed and fired smoothly. Dropped the brass right at my feet. You have to work the action smartly to get it to pop the brass up and out. If you were to try and work it slow, you might get some brass that fails to fly up out of the action and cause a jam or stovepipe.

I've got 3 or 4 different .357 moulds I plan to try. The only problem I foresee might be the 125 gr wadcutters. The rounds feed straight in.

I like it! I was a bit leery of spending the money ($1K+) but this is a fine quality rifle. And, I already mentioned it, NO SILLY SAFETY :D or rebounding hammer. (Wish I could say the same for my mid-90s 92)

EDIT: I used the 130 gr MC .38 Special rounds because they were the shortest I could find around the house. I think I just remembered where a stash or 357s are (too much hoarding, if there is such a thing) Since it's about 45 degrees warmer today than it's been in a long time, my targets are calling!!!

These are merely one week's purchase

In the past 12 months.....

Model 1873 Winchester (Miroku) 357
1866 Winchester (Cimarron-Uberti) .45 Colt
336 Marlin (ca 1949) .32 Special
1866 Uberti .44-40 carbine
1860 transitional Uberti .45 Colt
BL22 Browning .22 LR
1895 Winchester (miroku) .405 Win
1886 Browning SRC .45-70
94 Winchester (ca 1967) .30-30

I'm sure I left a few out :D I have got to stop buying and start shooting more. Retirement should be spent shooting.

Oh! Not levers, but a Baikal double rifle and a Sabatti 92 Express, both in .45-70. So far, they are both really good shooters!

Vance, congrats on the new '73 & '66! Next time we have a NoTex "get-together" we'll have to make it a shootin' event. Give us all a chance to show off our toys! If only there was nearby cowboy lever silhouette on the 3rd weekend of the month.
