Mini-14 Accuracy - maybe this was just luck...

Post by AJMD429 »

...but I sure do like it...!

When I get a chance to be home for a bit, I love taking one of my not-shot-in-awhile firearms back to the range, and just shooting a few shots at the gongs. ESPECIALLY since I got the Bobcat Steel ones that at 100 yards I can shoot with almost ANYTHING I have (FMJ 308, 30-06, 444 Marlin, 223 [steel-core ones make the slightest dimple so I don't use them]) without worry of damaging them.

Anyway, a ways back I got a HarBar for my Mini-14, and always wanted to sit down and do some serious range-time with it to see how accurate it really made my Mini-14.

I got, but didn't install, the optional laser-sight.

Well, this is a couple years now, and I just picked that firearm to go 'plink' with.

I shot six shots. First three at the 8" gong (standing, with forearm held by hand against upright post). Surprisingly (I'm not that good a shot) I hit it with all three...

So, what to do with the other three shots...? (I'd assumed I'd miss some or all of the shots, then use the next three on the 12" gong, like usually happens... )

I shot at the 4" gong. AND hit it. :o
So I shot at it again.. AND hit it. :o

Third time - you guessed it - a HIT...!!!

Someday I'll get to doing a Range Report (I actually thought I'd already done a mini-one, but couldn't find it). If the gun shoots well, I'll post a detailed report; but if not, then it just meant my hits were 'luck', and I'll forget about it... :D

Nice Doc. I'd have to be sitting to have any chance.

I wonder if that would help my Mini-30.

Thanks Doc, I've always liked the mini-14 but have let all mine go because of their lack of accuracy. Didn't know that gadget existed. Breathlessly awaiting some actual benched groups showing moa accuracy, if that's possible.

I think it has potential. Check the website out - http://har-bar.com/harbarownerscomments.html

Looks like if you move the clamps around and experiment a bit, it DOES make a difference.

For the price, I figured it couldn't hurt, and besides - I have a "M-14 look flash-hider" and the HarBar sort of looks like the exposed gas port on a M-14, so "it looks (sort of) cool" 8) . Not the first time I've spent money on something just 'cuz it looked cool.

I don't know that I'd buy a Mini-14 just because the device exists (and other makers produce similar barrel-rigidifier products), but if you already have a Mini-14, it may help it be more accurate. I don't CARE if my Mini-14 shoots 1 MOA like my AR-15, but I'm tickled pink if it can reliably hit the 4" gong at 100 yards. . . that's plenty of 'practical accuracy' for me.

I think GunBlast was where I first read about the device - http://www.gunblast.com/JessHardin-Mini14.htm

I've been thinking about one of these HarBar attachements for a while, but just out of curiosity.

Honestly, I've always been well satisified with the accuracy of my Mini-14.

Glad it's working as advertised for you, Doc.

Doc, Y2K will be jealous. He's been lusting after a mini-14 for some years now. Very cool! 8)

I'd heard they work, but being Mini-14-less, I never really bothered to try one out...... Good for you.

You just helped create a new marketing slogan:
