Lake Michigan Area Levergunner Shoot - Planning

Post by Old Ironsights »

Hokay. Things kind of fell apart for my impromptu MALTBEER (Michiana Area Levergun Target Busting ExtremE Rednecks  ) shoot this weekend, so Lets do an online collaboration for the best way to get a Group Gettogether later this spring/early summer.

Seeing as how a few of 'yall are Sorth or South of me, yet still relatively near the Lake (closer than anywhere else anyway) I'd still like to Host at my Club: Michigan City Rifle Club. http://michigancityrifleclub.com/

We have 25, 50, 75, 100 & 200 yds to shoot at, plus an indoor pistol range where "regular" handguns and Pistol Caliber Carbines with factory or catsneeze loads are permitted 24/7.

If we look at our calendars and match it to the MCRC calendar ( http://michigancityrifleclub.com/cgi/calendar/index.cgi ) I'll bet we can figure somthing out.

Camping IS allowed on site (no fee).

The 1st & 3rd Saturdays of each month are best, because the 2nd & 4th are used to set up for the following Sunday's IDPA or CAS shoots.

So, if you live in this relative area (about 4hrs drive), Let's talk. :D

Do it - you guys will have a great time. The So Cal one was enjoyed by all and there is band of comaraderie here that did exist before now that we all know each other.

OI,

June sounds good to me, but I can't guarantee anything that far ahead yet.

Could you send me some more detailed maps of the range and it location?

Thanks

Mapquest's directions are stupid. You are just under 4hrs from Springfield.

Take I55 to Chicago, then I94 (80/94) to Exit 40 (a/b) eastbound to South Bend.

The address of the Swap Meet right next door is 4938 W US Hwy 20,
Michigan City, IN 46360

Do a Gogle Maps "directions" from your place to "US-20/W US Hwy 20 @41.691963, -86.797698"

That's the only way Google finds it.

Tried Googling it like you said. Google said it couldn't understand the address. So I put the address of the swap meet and it found that ... sorta.

I got an idea where you are, will work on the maps from this end.

Did you leave the quotes on or off?

Go to http://maps.google.com/ and pick "get directions"

Copy this:

US-20/W US Hwy 20 @41.691963, -86.797698

And paste it in the "destination" feild. Worked for me... :?

OI,

Barring other obligations, I'd be there. I'm located about 45 minutes to the east of Michigan City, so the travel is not over burdonsome. 1st or 3rd weekend works well, but the 2nd Saturday of the Month, April through October is my club's Cowboy Shoot (Bend of the River Conservation Club's River Bend Rangers), so that day is out.

What kind of events are you looking at? I'm primarily a pistol caliber shooter, but do have a Marlin .45-70 that I'm more than willing to break out for the right event (meaning any excuse i can find).

"Events" are...

Bring guns, shoot at stuff, eat food.

I'm going to try to get permission to use Cowboy Action Gongs at 100 & 200, but otherwise we've got lots of target stands.

We can shoot anything but BMG. We can even get the Skeet thrower going if somebody brings a 9410 or 1887.... 8)

It worked that time. Don't know what I did wrong yesterday. What I really need a a more precise map of the area the range is in. Getting to the general area is no problems at all.

Google maps allows you to zoom in all the way down to the foot level anywhere along the route.

http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&hl=en&g ... 1&t=h&z=17

The Range is just above the green block of trees above the "B" callout.

Zoom away. 8)

And, FWIW I updated the Easting & Northing to the actual range entrance:

US-20/W US Hwy 20 @41.691412, -86.793500

MALTBEER (Michiana Area Levergun Target Busting ExtremE Rednecks)

I LIKE IT! :D If at all possible I would love to attend although the Rossi will probably stay home as I dont have a scabbered or have one fashioned to the bike. Hopefully I will have that Ruger Blackhawk 44 Spec by then and all the ammo I can carry in the saddlebags. If it works out that I can make it, I surely will.

Hook it across the handlebars like on an ATV...

According to the Club, our best bet looks like the 14th/15th or 28/29.

http://michigancityrifleclub.com/cgi/calendar/index.cgi

There's Muzzleloader on Sun-1, an NRA sanctioned Small Bore taking over the range on the 7/8, Trap on the am of the 15th, Cowboy on 21/22 and, so far, nothing on 28/29.

Since it's a 5th Sunday, there isn't any "regular" weekend event on the 29th. THat might be our best shot, though the 14th is clear because we really won't be in the way of Trap on the 15th.

I have tentative approval to set up gongs at 100 (18") & 200 (24") - as long as we promise to use Lead Only (no FMJ... as if...)

Copy the following and add your name to the count:

With a good list of names it will make it easier to secure that date with the Club.

And remember, overnight camping is allowed, and we have a 24hr indoor pistol house too.

So far the weekend of the 28th looks like a GO... I haven't been told "no" anyway, so I am therefore continuing with my planning.

Bring whoever you like, so long as they don't expect to shoot EBRs. (this time).

Gotta keep the BoD happy...

They want me to have an "official" Course of Fire, thereby making it an "Official" Club Event, thereby covering their Butts re: Insurance.

I think we're OK. I only have 2 Curmudegons who don't like anything they didn't think up grousing.

I'm going to use Ranch Dog Postal V to be the "Official" CoF (plus gongs for fun) and then, if possible, actually have & shoot Ranch Dog Postal VI...

I think we're a solid GO for June 28/29 - I even have a backup range at a DNR facility if the Curmudegons make things way too difficult... but I don't think it will be necessary.

To use my Club, I had to submit a relay-based course of fire, so if it seems really structured... it is. But we will have fun anyway.

NOTE: In cans they are needed, I will have on hand Lee Loaders in the following calibers: .38/.357, .30-30 & .45-70

Barring really ugly weather, here's Plan A.

Saturday June 28:

Sign-in begins at Noon.
1300 & Range/Safety Briefing(s), begin First Relay.

Relays will progress at 10 minute intervals with 5 minute seperations to change/review targets - 4 relays per hour. This ought to give most guys a chance to shoot Two to Four 5-round Ranch Dog targets per relay.
Side Match Targets: Once you are happy with your Ranch Dog targets, I will have a variety of Side Match Targets that can be shot in the same Relays as the RD targets.

1600 (+/-) LeverHunter Gong Match: (still pending approval)
After everyone is satisfied with their RD targets &/or 1600comes along we will have the LeverHunter Gong Match.

There will be an 18" gong at 200yds and an 8" gong at 100 yds. The objective will be to "Shoulder & Shoot" hunting style. Scoring will be "Miss & Out". (This will continue through & after Dinner until we have 100yd & 200yd winners - shoot-off for Special Prize - a genuine, imitation reproduction, made in India, artfully antiqued in America, cast-iron padlock marked "Property of Pony Express Station #6".
It weighs about 3# and works just fine. )

Image

Cookout & Fellowship to follow beginning at 1700. (I'm going to try to have enough food/beverage, but if people "pot-luck" a bit it will sure stretch my Stone Soup a bit farther... )

Overnight Camping onsite available.

NOTE: There is a Flea Market next door to the Range that runs all day Saturday & Sunday. Sometimes there's good stuff sometimes it's mostly junk. There IS a guy selling anvils right now though... he's even got a 550#er.

If people want to camp out, let me know so we won't have to Punt for breakfast.
