After much thought, I made my rifle decision ;- )

I looked at the Marlin 336W in 30-30 and was about to get that, but I would need to buy lots of ammo and accessories to fix her up like a guide gun !

I looked at my ammo locker and decided I have lots of 45-70 brass, lots of bullets and powder. I own two Marlin 45-70's, have them set up with scout scopes ;- ) I have a NEF single shot 45-70 ....... so why not another, I have all the dies and powder, bullets, etc, etc.

SOOOOOO ... today I put $ down on a Rossi Rio Grande in 45-70. I'm taking a gamble as I bought it sight unseen ;- ( but sometimes you take chances. I have read reports the Rio Grande rifles are coming in nice, so we will see, mine is a blued version. Not sure if I will use a Weaver 1-3x scope that I already have, or buy Skinner iron sights and have the custom peep sight block too ;- )

I have lots of 405 gr Remington bullets and will load those to about 1550 to 1650fps .... my question ?

I'm looking for a low mid range power load that does not dislocate my shoulder every time I pull the trigger ! I want more velocity than a Trapdoor, but only by a couple hundred or so fps.

At 1550-1650fps, how is the recoil in the Rio Grande ?

Have my Marlin set up shooting 425gr Leadhead gas checks at ~1825fps+ and those are stout rounds. I was hoping a drop in 200fps using a little lighter bullet would make a difference, but maybe not ?

I keep thinking I'm gonna spend serious range-time comparing 'duplicates' I have, then selling off the ones that aren't the best performers of each group, but I'll be 90 years old before I ever get to that...!

You're on the right track IMHO - I long ago abstained from shooting ANY boolit that weighed more then 300-350gr in any of my .45-70's ( to include Ruger #1 & #3 rifles, an H&R Buffalo Classic, a Winchester M86EL, and various Marlin 1895's, including an early/ported Guide Gun).

I was about to order a Rio Grand in 45/70 two weeks ago but read some bad comments on various forums. I read enough that I did not order the rifle.
I sincerely hope that you have good success with yours and I look forward to your posting your experience and opinions once you have had a chance to evaluate the rifle.

Well I can't say about the Rio Grande, but I can tell you that I just received my Rossi 92 and the fit and quality is on par with my two Marlin 1895's, my three 1894'2 and my 336.

My new Rossi 92 is very, very nice. I will be darkening the stock, but that is not big deal !

I am looking forward to my 45-70 Rio Grande, that I ordered today !
