Government office attracts the power-mad, yet it's people who just want to be left alone to live life on their own terms who are considered dangerous.

History teaches that it's a small window in which people can fight back before it is too dangerous to fight back.

Had to look up what a Mojave Green was, sounds bad Blaine. Tell your buddy prayers up for him that his dog recovers.

I don't know....I hope so....He lives on a golf course, and I guess they are inundated with them this year....Once, we were doing some damage to a bottle mescal, and a case of Michelob and thought it would be a good idea to go look for snakes about 1am   Lots of javelina around...I would think they would keep the snake population down ....

Ninety minutes north of me as well. Diamondbacks predominate further down here in the Sonoran desert (including for most requests of snake removers in the suburban fringe of Phoenix, but we've definitely got pockets of Mohaves :( :( I've reported here before a friend got nailed by one several years ago toward Yuma about about two hours southwest of Phoenix.

Hope the the dog is ok.

A heads up for you guys that have dogs and live in rattlesnake country.

I've had my dogs vaccinated (and get the recommended annual booster) for rattlesnake bite. Even with the the vaccine, any snake bite should be considered a veterinary emergency.

I'm seldom in rattlesnake country, but consider this cheap insurance for when I am. (I think the shots are only $15 or so).

Prayers raised to Heaven and keep us informed of how things are going. Will let the Wife and kids know to pray as well. My Daughter is 8 years old and when she prays for something its so honest and heart tugging Im not sure how God could resist it.

Like I said keep us informed. There is a reason a dog is called Mans Best Friend. Strong bond we have with them.

Unfortunately, the rattlesnake vaccine doesn't do a thing for the Mojave Green's venom. It's both a hemo toxin (which is what most rattlesnakes have and what the vaccine deals with) and a neuro toxin. Add to that the fact that the Greens have a generally bad disposition, and it's a lousy combination.

...And snake training your dog (shock collar). I've heard there are still a few around that do that though it's been years. Had one of my springers done but we never ran across a rattler with him so fortunately never needed to test effectiveness (or maybe that meant successful!). I always seemed to run cross the no leggeds without him! Last one was helping a friend get with one for his beagle. The training was very effective - many times on the trail. Stayed off the snake as trained and just bayed like crazy!

Couldn't edit my post off my mobile...but, speaking of dogs, I have none in this fight - just an example of training.

Adjusted my prayers for the wife. Where you get bit can have an affect on how the venom affects the victim.

She's a really small person....4'10" maybe a buck soaking wet....lower leg...They had to split the leg open so it wouldn't blow up....I guess it looks like a inside out sausage...the next surgeries are to get everything sewn back into place....muscles might never be right.....

I'll be good, and not make any "women vs. dogs" jokes, AND I'll send a prayer up for her as well.

(unsure of proper etiquette here - do I subtract the prayer for the pooch...? )

Seriously - hope she recovers well and quickly. Hopefully 'ICU' is just to get a bit more round-the-clock nursing attention and not because she's doing poorly... :(

Yep, revising my prayers as well. I hope she recovers quickly, but as Blaine said, bites from a green are serious business. Now for sure I hope he killed the snake.

Dang, sorry to hear it. Prayers for her recovery.

I've been in that area quite a lot in years past (inlcuding sleeping on the ground a lot), I didnt realize the snakes there were Mojaves, I thought they were ordinary diamondbacks. I don't know how many I killed years ago, but I certainly had, and have, no regrets for doing so.

Prayers adjusted and re-sent for her.

I love animals and the animal world in all (most of) its diversity and understand roles, but I wouldn't shed tears over a well executed Mohave (and D-back for that matter) eradication program, "replacing" with more Bulls and Cal Kings. I know that'd still mess up mother nature's balance somewhere,...but just saying. The purist herpetologists and eco-biologists out there will say you've got to take the bad with the good, and I get that with many critters, but I truly have no use for the fanged ones. They seem like a sort of mistake - along with the likes of the Komodo, etc, unintended residual from the dinosaur ages.

I used to think the same about some of our Sonoran desert areas too (as being "safe" from the Mohaves, and being "just" diamondback territory--faint praise or hope there?) but have discovered most any part of the western half of the state south of the Grand Canyon is susceptible, with the highest concentrations being in Mohave, La Paz, Yuma, Yavapai and western Maricopa counties. I've heard of some to the east in Pinal County--where I really thought was mostly Diamondback territory. Disconcerting, we've got some in Scottsdale (northeast-central Maricopa County) dug in on the mountain slopes, according to a You Tube video. I've just seen the D-backs here close in on the east side of Phoenix. Brrr to both types!!

Prayers for the lady and her family. Y have to say, I.ll give most any snake free passage unless it crosses that imaginary line of being too close then it gets about 120 grains of #11 shot. Questions are rehashed in my mind later.

Glad she is on the mend.

My older brother got bit by a Mojave just outside Kingman, he spent a week in a hospital in Vegas, he was back to framing houses ten days later.

My best friend in High school got bit in the ankle by a Diamondback in 9th grade, he never recovered completely, he graduated in a cast on crutches.
