The New Ride!

Post by Old Savage »

Here it is fellows - the new ride. My wife and daughter picked it out for me from a list of possibilities I gave them to go look at. 2.0L 4 cyl., 6 speed automatic, roll up windows, front wheel drive 4x2.

Image

It is the second one here listed at $17,453.

http://www.hunterdodgechryslerjeep.net/ ... cale=en_US

I chose to add the 999 month, 999,999 mile extended warranty for $1180 :)

Nice....you don't need 4WD in Southern Cali., and the air conditioner is never off so why need power windows?

Interesting warranty. Wife is wanting a new vehicle and I've been thinking about a 4door Wrangler.

FRONT wheel drive 4x2????????? OK, I can understand REAR wheel drive 4x2, but FRONT????? And how in the world did you find one with roll up windows? I thought those were extinct or special order only for an extra charge. Truth be known I like electric windows, but that's just me.

Nice ride any way you look at it though.

It's rugged alright - wet grass certified! A mall Jeep.

Joe, the roll ups pretty much sealed the deal. Electrics are not good in the dust sometimes - $400 per to fix them.

Reminds me of the 87 Cherokee I tried to buy - $18,000, I offered $15,500 - they let me walk.

Darn Blaine - what was I thinking - I should have insisted they throw in the curb finders - and a Mr Fusion! :)

Sore Shoulder is looking at serious 4x4 - mine came with one year subscription to Sirius Radio.

Supposed to get 21 - 28 of those MPGs.

My wife told me it will hold two lamps.

Entirely financed no money down by no interest loans from friendly blondes. :)

Gotta love it when a new ride comes along.

I too have no love for front wheel drive, especially if one lives in a warm climate, but to be honest there is no way I would buy the wife or one of my daughters a rear wheel drive only vehicle for here in Iowa. They have their place so that's why the manufactures make em like that.

I'm another that prefers hand cranks, e-windows are just something else to break. E-locks are another matter entirely. Me really likes those.

My Jeep is a older Wrangler but I also consider it a "Mall Jeep" -- Its only been in 4wd once in 3 years, and that was by choice just to see if it worked

My Pathfinder is a bear to drive in cross winds. Keeping it in my lane is an exercise in concentration.

Actually the import vehicles I've bought with electric windows have never given me the least trouble.
My 69 Buick, 72 Buick, and 7? Cadillac all needed the motors replaced. Glad I worked at a parts store that gave employee discounts then.

This one was imported from Belvidere, Ill. I had/have problems with both Buick 99 and Cadillacs 78 and 87 on the electric windows. All the electric is very convenient I agree. Like automatic sprinklers - great when they work right.

Well it is registered to my wife and I so I don't know if it passes to a new owner - good question. They call it lifetime but it is defined in the paper work as I stated it. I wondered about the whole new 6 speed transmission thing and a 2.0L engine getting 158 HP and having a 10.5 compression ratio but running on 87 Oct. DOHC 16 valve with variable valve timing and mutlipoint fuel injection. Wow, now what does all that mean? I threw it all out here to see who knew what about it. Still going through the manual of course.

PERFECT Fred!!!!!!!! You can get a lot of women in that thing and just think of all the women you can carry on the luggage rack.

Looking forward to seeing some nice young ladies posed along the length of you new ride. Afterall, it's a Patriot and there's nothing more patriotic or American for that matter than young ladies and cars.

Good color... er... or lack thereof. :P :P :P

Light vehicles, regardless of drive system are problematic in wind, in direct proportion to their height.

The variable valve timing will give you a broader power band. In the 4 cylinder that makes a big difference allowing you to stay in higher gears at lower rpm for better mileage, unlike the older 4 poppers that you had to keep in higher rpms for grades etc. The 6 speed will do even more to keep it in that power band. We've had 4 vehicles now with the 6 speed auto, and two with the VVT. Pretty much all trans are 6 speeds now.

That's the only thing that I don't like about it. In the snow and mud it's awesome, but our trip to TX last year was miserable.
We drove eight hours into a 50-70 MPH windstorm and after ten hours I was a basket case!
Best part is that they really hold their value and is going to be a great trade when I go back to an F-150 4WD four door.
If I had the cash and didn't need the trade I'd keep it around just for an "about town Rag Top"

My wife and I have both driven Cherokees forever (literally, since '89 or so), and I'm still using my old '90 with 320+K miles for a snow vehicle. Two springs ago I bought her a Patriot as a graduation present- after raising our kids, she went back to school and earned her RN. She needed something solid to drive when she was coming home by herself on snowy roads. Ours is a 4x4, 2.3L, manual transmission, and we could not be more pleased with it. With decent winter tires it does great in the snow, and it does ride much better than the Cherokees. Her favorite feature is the heated seats- sounds fru-fru I know, but an hour drive home after nearly 13 hours on her feet gets longer with a knotted-up back, and she says the heat really helps.

The Patriot is definitely not the tough workhorse that the Cherokees are, but it is a more refined replacement at a reasonable cost. I am surprised that the little 4-cylinder maintains about the same speeds at a hard pull up our mountain grades that the Cherokee's 4.0 6-cylinder would. If I can keep her from hitting deer with it, I think it will last a long time! I think you will like yours.

Good luck!

The wife used to have an 01 F-150 Supercrew 4x4, very very good truck. I always have a Ford Powerstroke 4x4. We had a nice AWD SUV that did very well, we gave it to daughter when she graduated college. Ford is making a AWD SUV with the ecoboost, I've been looking pretty hard at that.

Last company I worked for I had an F-150 with that new V-8. I was getting 22 MPG until I got the ladder rack put on. But, it only dropped to 20 after that. My new GMC work truck is a full size Sierra with a 6 cyl. Lucky to 17-18 MPG. I like the smooth ride of the GMC but the F-150 was WAY better!

The wifes had the bigger V8 and got a steady 17 in the mtns going over passes and 19 on the interstate at 85 mph. That was an 01 so I'm not surprised the newer models are even better. I heard the Ecoboost is getting mid 20's.

Sadly it means it sips gas, but even with a six speed, you're gonna wish for a few more cylinders and ponies eventually.

Well Jeep for the last 10 years I had less ponies and my Saab 96 in the seventies had a lot less and I loved those. This seems fast! :) And my 6 cyl 51 Ford had 95 as I recall. Even my 87 Cadillac had less. Some like a lot of power - I like making a little do a lot. To each his own. I joke about the comparative capabilities but this will do all I ever wanted - short of a pickup's hauling ability.

One word "Rubicon". I did it in '83 in a stock CJ8. I gotta find those pics.
I had a CJ8, pickup cab. Lifted, 35's, 350 4 speed and a lot of other things I don't recall, I see it running around the mtns every summer and cringe. The only thing worse for swallowing money than CJ's is a jetboat. And years later a stock 98 4Runner Limited with electric locker did everything those CJ's would except it looked good and was comfortable for 4 people a dog and gear. CJ's blah.

"Swallowing money"? I'm still running that '82 CJ. I've rebuilt the engine, tranny, transfer case, and put ARB's in the diffs. Added extras like lifts, tires, bumpers, winch, lights and things I've forgotten about that came and went. And, it's due for a complete front end overhaul. Still, imagine how much money I would have parted with had I replaced it every five years. Nope, that CJ has just sipped money.

But with almost 300,000 miles on it, and I still off road it regularly, and the fact that I can fix anything on it without a computer telling me what's wrong, I'm gonna keep running until I get too old to fix it or die, whichever comes first.

I guess that's just a lesson I learned from dad. Take care of your tools, and they'll take care of you.
