Someone posted about a bucket list, well these weren't on My list but it does include a bucket. Got a call from a Guy last nite that had some ammo for sale plus a couple swords which I forgot to get a pic of. Ammo wasn't much to talk about. Box and a 1/2 of 308 Norma Mag, 2 boxes minus 1 Win 38 sp (fmj & jhp), some loose 303 British-243-6mm-223-10mm and more. There was also 33 rnds of 17 rem. The jackpot was in the bottom of the box (about 20 or 30 loose 22 lr)
Ok on to the bucket -o-guns. Another Guy there had a couple Guns that had been in a fire, a S&W mod 1500 in 30-06 and a verry post 64 mod 94 ser# in the 5 mil range. What is that about 2000 or so ? Anyhow I bought them for parts as the heat might have weakened things, any Metallurgists here. Of course You can't tell much by the lousy pics I take but I'm wondering if they might be salvaged.Al te 94 would need is cleaned up and a forearm and the S&W would need cleaned up and a whole new stock. I'm not into bolt guns so that would prolly just be parts or whatever. Interesting inscription on the s&w "made in Japan to S&W specs" I thot it kinda funny.
Now My wheels are turning, remember that 38-55 I was going to build from another 94. I'm thinking I caint hurt this receiver so try My hand at removing a barrel ansd screw that 38-55 barrel onto this recvr instead of a perfectly good 94 30-30. Just what I need , another projct.
Anyhow got a couple pics for Ya in case Someone doesn't knowwhat a 94 looks like, I'm sure You've all seen a S&W 1500.

I redid a Winchester 92 that had been in a fire..Most remarkable was the buttstock that looked as scorched as the one you have there..I globbered on some linseed oil and rubbed a bit and all the black come off..I'll have to guess that it was just varnish that had turned black from the heat but I dont know as I was convinced it was the wood itself that was scorched......If it is convenient you may try the linseed oil on piece of your burnt lumber and see what it does.
If one can redo a gun like the one in the "Dug Relic" thread over at "The HighRoad", those should be a piece of cake. If you plan on replacing the barrel anyway, just have the receiver and bolt "stress relieved" and re-tempered properly. The balance of the internals refinished and springs replaced.

There is a fine line between hobby & obsession! AND... I'm over it!!

Well I dont know as I traded for it without hearing the full story..I observed that the tube magazine and forearm wood was gone and the loading gate was pried out or possible the tube magazine had been loaded and rounds went off in the fire and with them the magazine and fore end?..But I'm just guessing..I relined the barrel and re-heat treated everything.I said its a model 92 but actually its a model 65 in .218 BEE .
I haven't checked the springs or any internals yet. Time constraints don't Ya know. Heck if it checks out it might be a shooter. I hven't run anything through the bore yet so don't know what that is like. I will keep Ya posted on progress.

That bore should be fine! You know, the hole through the barrel, not the barrel itself.
The rest of it probably is junk unless you know someone who works for a heat treating company.
Heat treating small batches is usually way too expensive to do.
Bet you that even the springs are still good. That wood was just scorched, not burned away.. Wood starts burning at 662 F.. I temper my springs at higher temps than that...I'd try the springs and if they are good as I suspect then I'd feel safe assuming the other parts are good as they are..
And my disclaimer- I do this as a hobby so you cant trust anything I say
Got a little time to work on it tonite. All the internal springs seem to be good- Extractor, ejector, hammer, and trigger spring. However the magazine spring suffered some collapse about midway of the tube, there is about 2 1/2 inches of tightly coiled spring, looks like it just drew up from heat. I ran a brush with some #9 (5 passes then a patch and it shines like a new penny). The rest of the Gun is cleaning up really well. The Bolt pin was part way out and the Bolt wouldn't move either way. I got the pin back in and moved the bolt forward for removal of the pin, then of course the lever came out and I was able to remove the Bolt. Looking good so far, kinda excited now to work on it some more. I'll keep Ya posted on progress.
