336 Cowboy

I found a 336 cowboy in a local pawn shop last summer at a really good price which I didn't have to spare at the time (slow work).

Each time I went to the store over the last 6 months, it was just sitting there. Price had gone from 750.00 down to 600.00.

I had an old not so good 1917 enfield in fair shape that I wanted to trade. Short story , I gave 25.00 and walked out with it.

Before I filled out the paper work he stopped me and said , Oh yea , did you notice it's in that old caliber that no one wants? 38/55 Winchester "caliber no one wants" I just said yes.

While we were doing the papers he went to the back and brought out the box. It was actually new in the box. Made in 2001 if I checked it right . Last 2 # in serial is 99.

I am really blessed, I've wanted one of these ever sence I first saw them.

Got some starline brass 1.125 original length and a lee mold.

Great catch, great rifles. They wear Badger barrels. Marlin built those right. If you roll your own, try Starline 2.125" brass and bullets sized .380". Please let us know how you make out. Blessings, 1886.

My only Marlin is the 38-55 CB, it shoots great with the Lee bullet or Ranch Dog, sized to 379
I hate to say it BUT it shoots better than my 375 94 Win.

Well, he was right, from the standpoint of most gunshops; they would find lots of folks want the common chamberings, but only a few would want the challenge of an 'oddball' one like 38/55. That just makes it easier for the few of us who DO want such items...

QUESTION: If your only 38/55 is a modern-production gun, is there any reason you couldn't just use 375 Winchester loads data in it...??? I could see if you had another 'vintage' one and didn't want to confuse loads, that it would be an issue, and I could see that you would NOT want to have a bunch of 'hotter than spec.' .38/55 rounds sitting around for someone to blow their gun up with after you die and your goods are passed along, but it seems you have a nice, strong gun regardless...

A nice used one, with box, just closed on GunBroker this week for almost 2X that, $1,125...

Somebody wants 'em, but they must have deep pockets for sure!

That doesn't surprise me !

In my younger days I was all about older Winchesters mainly for the collector value . But after having shot a fair number of older Winchesters and then the older and newer Marlin's in the more recent years , on the whole I've found Marlin's to be more accurate then Winchesters .

Relining of so called "collector firearms" is strictly verbotten !

If it's a good one for someones collection you send it down the road and shop for another so one does not loose their proverbial butt !

I love the .38-55. Sam Fadala did good with his 336 CB 38/55 too.

As to using the .375 in the .38-55, just because you can doesn't mean you should. Correct length brass can be loaded to EXCEED FACTORY .375 Winchester performance.
