Good times.
Wish I had a place nearby to shoot that far. Looks like a nice range there.

Cool! Is it an original? Any idea what year?
The LORD is my light and my salvation; Whom shall I fear?
The LORD is the defense of my life; Whom shall I dread?

Re: Shooting the Rolling Block
Ted it is a very nice range I will have to get some pics of it next time I am there. It is the only one around that goes farther then 200 yards.
ving-thor yes it is an original the last date on the address line is Nov 7th 1871.

Nice! I agree. 380 is the longest range I have access to. I say its road trip time and we show up down there!TedH wrote:Good times.Wish I had a place nearby to shoot that far. Looks like a nice range there.

Neat show of force! I can see the healthy recoil of that bad boy!-------Sixgun
(I can see you have SKS, AK, and AR shooters there too)

I taught myself to shoot both shoulders. It became a necesity after my shoulder surgery last May on my right shoulder.flatnose wrote:I would give my right arm to be ambidextrous. Healthy load of B.P.
Dosent help that the rifle only weighs 9 1/2lbs. If it wasn an original I would fill the butstock with lead until it at least weighed 12lbsSixgun wrote:Neat show of force! I can see the healthy recoil of that bad boy!-------Sixgun

No AK/SKS/AR's there that day. Had a couple guys practicing IPSC and a concealed carry class also had a gent firing a bunch of Mossin Nagant M44's and a M1 Garran.
Come on down.FatJackDurham wrote:Nice! I agree. 380 is the longest range I have access to. I say its road trip time and we show up down there!TedH wrote:Good times.Wish I had a place nearby to shoot that far. Looks like a nice range there.

Great All around.
. The weather there looks Good. it's snowing here temp dropping 18* right now.Thank You.
Re: Shooting the Rolling Block
It was a high of 60° its only supposed to get to 38° tomorrow
As much as I enjoy shooting it my next bp cartridge rifle it will be heavier in the 12# range and will be something with lighter recoil like a 40-65. Just cant handle as much recoil post surgery on the right shoulder. Guess I could load lighter bullets and or less powder but where is the fun in that

Re: Shooting the Rolling Block
Actually Jeremy the 45/70 is stellar with light loads, cat sneeze variety up to the pistol equivalent. You get trigger time and get to cozy up to the sight picture and get the cloud of smoke, or not, get the satisfying click..boom..........................clang when you ring the gong. all with no recoil and lower costs. plus, if you make a simple bullet snatcher behind the gong you can recycle it. You can load shot. You can load round balls. There's a ton of fun in any 45/70.
what's not to like about that?
Nice gun, I still don't have a roller, still mourning the loss of my first one.
Grizz

Re: Shooting the Rolling Block
Grizz I actually shoot round ball loads in it all the time out to 50 yards for plinking and fire forming. But the heavy long range load is a bear

Re: Shooting the Rolling Block
Jeremy,
Love that rifle. Nice range too.
Question: Wouldn't it be easier on the shoulder to shoot off hand and let your body move with the recoil?
Just a thought. My Enfields with their short stocks always beat the snot out of me on the bench but are decent off hand.

Re: Shooting the Rolling Block
Yes it would be but 500 yards with the barrel sights really requires a rest. Need to work out a better sight set up that wont permanently alter the gun.J Miller wrote:Jeremy,

That and some padding for the shoulder wouldn't hurt either.JReed wrote:Yes it would be but 500 yards with the barrel sights really requires a rest. Need to work out a better sight set up that wont permanently alter the gun.J Miller wrote:Jeremy,

Jeremy,
Back when I would do extended sessions with .458 Win Mag.
I adjusted everything for bench sessions with a bag of shot between me and the gun.
