Rifling twist rate in a Mossin Nagant?

Post by m.wun »

Maybe someone here knows what the old Mossin Nagant rifles have for rifling twist
rate?

IIRC, they are the metric equivalent of 1:10"

ETA: yes, I checked - is 1:9.45"

Thank you! I thought I might keep bullets on the heavy side and keep the speed down.
I would like to go upwards of 200gr at around 2300-2500 fps.Maybe even a round nose.

The Hornady .312/ 174 gr RN has been a great bullet for my Moisin's and 1895 Winchester Muskets.

Moisin's have rifling? :>)

I can't fnd reloading brass. Everybody claims it's cheaper to use milsurp, but I know I could produce better ammo.

I highly recommend loading gas check 200 grain .314" cast bullets (Lyman mold) to around 1850 fps or so - they are accurate, shoot a bit lowwer too - allowing you to adjust the sights to near point of impact at 100 yards :)

2571: I have lots of mil surp ammo, some of it is brass cased. I take twenty rounds and pull the bullets with an inertia puller, weigh each charge of powder, average them, use a bullet of the same weight or a little lighter (hunting type soft nose) and reload useing a set of dies with the deprimer pin removed to neck size.. clean your gun just the same (still corrosive). That should give you a project for a rainy day... Les
This is plagiarized from someone else, but I love it!

Graf & Sons lists 7.62x54R Prvi Partizan unprimed brass for under $50/100 but I see that they are currently out of stock. Opinions vary on the quality of Prvi brass but I have had good luck with their 7x57 and 303 British.

I found some 174gr steel case mil cheapies for 12$. If I can keep them in a 5" circle
at 200 yards with irons I will be happy with that. This is the third mossin I played with. Its
going to get a Boyds stock, slick up the bolt, trigger clean up, and I do a nice bent bolt that
looks factory to the untrained eye.A cheap project that ends up fairly nice and allows me
to shoot more without wearing out all the good guns in my small collection.

Do you have a photo? It would be interesting to see your work.

I am sorry that this was not meant for me, but just a thought about Mosin-Nagant bolts, get a sniper bent bolt and do the modification from that. It will save a ton of work.

When I get this one done in a few weeks I'll see about some photos.I don't go crazy
with the bend.A nice 45 degrees and I might try to lengthen and enlarge the knob.I make
wafer thin cuts where I want the bend, then remove material on the inside of the bend, next
I wrap the bolt in a wet rag.The next step is to weld the grove up one spot weld at a time
sometimes waiting a minute or two between spots.I don't let the bolt get hot!Once I have
the material built up how I want it I rough out the shape with the dremmel then finish up
shaping with emery cloth.Once shaped alittle fine emery cloth and a wire wheel to finish.
