OT/ Stevens 311 is Home

Went and picked up My 311/410 this afternoon. Got it Home and cleaned it up a little, didn't take much. Hardest part was getting the paint flecks off of it,it got too close to someones spray painting project, wasn't bad though. It cleaned up super nice. Doesn't look to be used much at all, looks more like it sat in a corner all it's life. The case colors on the recvr r just the way I like them (not too bright) Blue is nie unto perfect. This Gun can be Truly called like New except for a couple nicks & scratches in the Wood.
My picture taking leaves a lot to be desired but they r there. Gonna have to brush up on the Bore shot but they r Perfect-the bores that is.
Like I said in a previous post about this Gun, I have had MY Eye out for one for better than 20 years (told U I was patient). The Shop owner said that 3 people came in looking for it after I bought it. Prolly says that to all the Guys.

I think that the Stevens 311 series are real sleepers. Worth more than they sell for. I know that you will enjoy that one.

I have two 311s, a 12 and a 16.

I have a Montgomery Wards (Wards Westernfield) 16 ga. Same gun but tenite/plastic stock. Just like the one my dad gave me long ago. Replaced the one I really should have kept. The plastic makes for a light gun.

I believe that it was two different frame sizes; one for .410, larger one for others. I've only seen 12 & 16. There may be a 20 but I've never seen one.

Never seen a 20g 311. I've seen the 12 and 16 and the smaller framed .410 bore.

Surely if they made 12-16 & 410 they made a 20. Anyone care to chime in that is in possesion of a 20 ga.

That is a good question......I think it is except for the recoil shields. I would think a different reciever is used for the shield sizes alone no? Have to look into it.....

I believe the receiver is the same for 12, 16, 20. Difference seems to be in barrel contour. They are a pretty stout shotgun, not a "fine" shotgun like other american double's. I have a steven's 5000 16 gauge with 26" bbl and Mod/ imp choke. I bought it about 15 years ago. When I bought it if you fired the rear trigger first the front would go off during recoil. When I had a snap cap in it I could give the buttstock a good rap and the front trigger would trip. Bought new part's at numrich and good to go. It is my favorite grouse gun. I would like a .410, but kinda pricey. Good luck with your's.

@ MS, "kinda pricey" is what has kept Me at bay for so long. I normally don't even look at the Shotguns in this particular Store.

As for the recvr size, I measured Mine at 1 5/8 in across the face of the recvr. In looking at it it does look kinda small. Anybody got a 12 ga to measure ?

My 1960's vitange Stevens 311...has the contoured reciever sides near hinge pin, unserial numbered:

All rough measurements.....
From bottom of reciever to top of recoil shields: 2.180"
Width of reciever from side to side: 1.577"
Length of Reciever at bottom(includes forearm spacer), to where it meets buttstock: 3 and 15/16"

No it's the 12 Gauge. I can't get my hands on my buddies 20 Gauge right now. All I remember was the recoil shields were smaller and the barrels a good bit narrower as one would expect on the smaller gauge.

Got two 12 gauge 311's. Both pre-serial number models. Both with 18" barrels. Awesome "behind the bedroom door" guns.

My dad had a 16 gauge IC/modified 311 when I was a kid. It had uncheckered walnut wood as I recall. He had stopped hunting birds by the time I came along so it was strictly a working farm gun.
In those days, the nearby townsfolk got rid of unwanted dogs by simply driving a few miles into the country and letting them loose. The usual result was roaming packs of dogs who killed livestock and prevented kids from playing outside.
Dad and the neighbors kept the guns close at hand while on their properties and would gradually kill off the packs.
When I turned ten, he voiced his intent to sell the 311 in order to buy "us" a .22 rifle. He sold it in November 1968 to the local fire department. They raffled it off to raise money.
Dad died of a massive heart attack the next month.
When I was in high school, I tried in vain to track down Dad's gun.
I did finally get my first.22 when I was 14. My brother in law bought it for me and started my shooting education. He is truly one of my father figures and is very ill as we speak. Please pray for his comfort and peace.

Update - My brother in law passed away on September 19. He will always be missed. Sounds like an excellent and fitting reason to find a 16 gauge 311 to honor both him and my Dad.

Back in the day, NYPD had short barreled 311's for detectives, mostly because they figured they weren't gun guys and not too many people can screw up a double barrel.



On the pics: Having a neutral background (bedsheet, etc) and something to partially prop the piece up (book, spare magazine for a rifle, etc) will help the pics come out better and not look so visually cluttered.

What a great squirrel shotgun this would be! The .410 bore is a huge favorite for squirrel in NW NC/SW VA. Enjoy it!

The shields are different for all the gauges. I have a 12 and a 16, my brother in law has a 20 and Dad has a 410.
