The Betty Lamp

These lamps dade back to the 1700 and are kinda cool, smokey but cool.

The first one hangs on the teeth of the part in the middle and as the oil got low you could tip it forward which would make the oil run to the front, a piece of animal fat would be paced in the pan and slowly melt from the heat.
The pan under the top pan was to catch the dripping from the wick, those where made by carving out a psttern in a oak block then hammering the metal into it.

Well Joe we don`t have much and a old small house but we will find a place for ya somewhere, got a 31 foot class A motorhome ya can stay in, electric, water, fridge the whole works.

Have you ever made something like the Alaska native stone seal fat lamps? Same idea I think. Kind of look like alladin's lamp. ancient stuff that hearkens to hearth and home.

Here's a cool lamp you can make to replace votives/emergency candles in those mini-hurricane lanterns.



It's a 1-1/4" copper pipe end cap with a piece of 3/8" copper tubing soldered into the cap.

(The small tube has 3 "V" notches cut/files into the base. Be careful not to fill the notches with solder.)

Take paper towel and roll it into as tight a cylinder as you can and stuff it down the tube, leaving about 2mm to the top of the tube.

Swage a bit of fine screen down on top of the paper towel.

Fill the cup 1/2-7/8 (don't let it flow over the center tube) with Olive Oil.

While the Paper towel is soaking up the oil, dip a cotton swab (REAL COTTON ONLY) in the olive oil and pull off the head.

Set the head on the screen and light with a match.

It produces a yellow flame that is fairly useful, but sooty smoke. Still, Olive Oil Lamps worked for millennia.

fun and interesting subjects. I like it when someone shows how things were done. Found out Lard Oil, not rendered Lard burned white and bright. It was favored by Railroads for signal lights, lanterns as well was considered a good lubricant and cutting oil by some machinest and watch makers. Also a little trick with olive oil lamps is to dissolve some salt crystals in the olive oil to prevent smoking. Works pretty good. Great stuff keep it coming. ATB

What i was wondering is why the screen then the cotton on top, i understand the cotton is the wick but why not just a wick from top to bottom. Also will lamp oil work.

Because the cottonball is eventually consumed.

I suppose you could use a full length round cotton wick, but once it burned down to the top of the draw tube it would be a pita to pick out.

Basically you are trying to retain the wicking action as long as possible by not burning the actual wick, only the flame head.

Back from shop seeing i`m a terrible soldering i welded the tube to a tin base that just sits in the can. Used a tee shirt for the wick with the screen on top then a piece of cotton gauze on top.

Forgive me but i don`t know what a Votive-size lamp is.

A Votive is one of those little candles that either go in or are sold in aluminium or glass cups to be put in small hurricane lamps or other such things.
