OT: 360 Degree Cockpit View of P51C Mustang (WWII Fighter)

Post by Old No7 »

Wow, this is really awesome!!!

If you like planes, then be sure to check out every angle of the up/down or left/right views and you can even zoom in/out to check out all the details. I sure did!

Here's the link: P51C Mustang 360-d Cockpit View

( Sorta makes you wonder how/where they mounted the camera, doesn't it??? )

Some of you have heard from me before that my late father worked on Spitfires on an RAF Base northeast of London back in WWII, and then they got P47 Thunderbolts when the US Army Air Corp took over flight operations. Finally, they traded in the old "Jugs" and got the Mighty Mustangs, first the B Models and later the Ds with their bubble canopies. (I don't remember hearing about any Cs.) From his stories, I can make the following observations...

* From these views, you can really see why "the boys" liked the D Model versus the framed-canopy of the B or C Models (or a Malcolm Hood, if you were stuck with a B or C), so you had a less obstructed view of all the bogies flying around you.

* I'm surprised there isn't a Spitfire rear-view mirror mounted at the top of the windshield, as almost all the B & D 'Stangs on my Dad's base were fitted that way -- but maybe that's because they had Spits on the base in the early years of the war.

* Wow, there's sure a lot of things to touch and watch in there! This would be a great place for a "Knobulator" (one who plays with knobs!) to spend an hour or two! I sure wish my Dad was still around so we could play with this together... And I'm sure he would have noted the missing screw in the right floorboard too -- and given the Crew Chief some flak about it!!! (He was in charge of all C-Chiefs for A Flight, 335 FS, 4th FG.)

FYI, here he was back in the 90's with a D-model Mustang at an area air show:

Gosh, he would have loved viewing that website... Hope you do too!

Very awesome Old No. 7. Makes you about die wanting to crank on the stick and throttle in the view. God Bless your Dad, and those like him.

Utterly fascinating.

Thanks!

Government office attracts the power-mad, yet it's people who just want to be left alone to live life on their own terms who are considered dangerous.

History teaches that it's a small window in which people can fight back before it is too dangerous to fight back.

A digital camera on a rotating and tilting tripod head is used to take multiple images. Those images are then loaded into a program for creating panoramas which stitches them seamlessly together and builds the 360 pano. As with everything it seems, it used to be difficult and expensive and soon I expect consumer grade cameras will do it automatically while you go and get a Coke.

Cheers,

I would love to be able to learn to fly a P51. They are the best of the propeller driven planes, or at least in my opinion. Great views.
