As happens fairly often, I have an urge to dig deeper into a subject I'm familiar with but don't have a lot of knowledge about, if that makes sense.
Today's subject is Native Americans.
Right now I'm most interested in the Plains Indians and the tribes in the Southwest during and after the Civil War. Outside of what I was taught in school (and barely remember) from the late 70s through the 80s and what's been covered in some documentaries, movies, etc I haven't done any real reading about them.
I'm looking for website and book recommendations, preferably websites to begin with.

The only reason I'm asking for recommendations on websites instead of just googling them is that old internet song and dance "I read it on the internet so it MUST be true". We all know that isn't the case...

You might find of interest the book "One Vast Winter Count - The Native American West Before Lewis and Clark" by Colin G. Calloway. It ends about the time you said you wanted to begin, but the background it provides is interesting.
And of course there are Native Americans from Mexico to the tip of Argentina and all over Canada as well.
Lastly (as far as what feeble info I can offer), when I was on Grenada I learned that the indigenous tribe, the Carib people, were wiped out by Europeans everywhere but a few spots on Dominica and their language has been lost.

Excellent book, more than you ever thought you wanted to know about the Plains Indians, and for a lot less than I paid for it 30 years ago. http://www.amazon.com/Mystic-Warriors-P ... 156924538X Title is "The Mystic Warriors of the Plains". Well worth the price and lots of wonderful pictures by all the well known painters working in the West during the Fur Trade period.
Thanks for the book suggestions! They'll go on my birthday/Christmas list (they're 10 days apart ) even though this bug may have passed by then.
The last time I really got this kind of urge to expand my historical knowledge was 10-12 years ago. I wound up getting into the Napoleonic Wars, primarily the Peninsular War. I think I have almost all of the books in the Sharpe's Rifles series and enough reference books to fill a couple of "regular" bookshelves. Especially if you include the later actions the British Army was involved with up to WWI.
Half Price Books can be a bad influence...

I culled about 2 boxes of books out of the "library" (how many different variations of Great Battles of WWII or Aircraft of the World books do I REALLY need? Most were bought on closeout at B&N or B-A-M anyway) and I'll be taking them to Half Price Books. They usually have individual T-L books as well as complete sets for decent prices. If the T-L books are worth a hoot I'll look for them in addition to the suggestions already posted (never know what I'm going to find ).
