My brother has an upcoming, last minute mule deer/ antelope hunt to attend. He SOOOOO wants to take his Winchester 70 in 270. All he asks me is...."can you work me up a Nosler Partion load (130 or 150) ?" Soooo I'm looking for any favorites or good leads on a load for Partitions in .270. Thanks in advance, Tom
10-23-09 UPDATE
Been working a few days on this .270 Winchester load and I must say it's a fairly easy round to load for. And I had fun doin' it to boot! The final load worked out as:
Once fired Winchester brass
150 grain Nosler Partition
Federal 210M primer
54.9 grains of Reloader 19 powder
3.375" OAL
Chrono'd at 2861 fps avg SD 12 ED 37
3 shots in 1" @ 200 yds !!! ........and I'm not that good of a shot !! The fourth shot is the final scope adjustment. He has exactly 40 rounds now to practice and hunt with. WHEW ! I'm glad that monkey is off my back........
Thanks, Tom

Here are a few loads that worked for me:(1) W-W cases, WLR primers, 53 grains of IMR-4350, 130 grain Speer SPBT bullet. Average muzzle velocity for five shots was 3061 fps. (2) Same cases, primers, and powder as above except 51 1/2 grains of IMR-4350 ahead of the 150 grain Sierra spitzer boat-tail bullet. Average muzzle velocity for five shots was 2892 fps.
Muzzle velocity figures are for a 26 inch barrel.
Work up loads carefully a half grain at a time. Good luck.
If it were me, I'd suggest he go down to the local store and pick up a couple boxes of factory loads and try them out at the range to see which one performs the best. It's just my opinion of course, but I wouldn't want to risk a hunt on some handloads that haven't been proven at the range.
Just sayin...that's all.

What he said. If I understand your OP, YOU are going to be loading HIS ammo for HIS hunt that he is going to come all the way out west for? If you do that and he misses his shot, guess who will never hear the last of it!
Seriously, most shooters will neither reload for someone else or shoot someone else's reloads. Not even a brother's.
I'd second the idea of grabbing a couple boxes of factory ammo if you don't have time to really do it right for a particular rifle. Federal Premium loads are very, very, good ammo in several bullet types. Rarely necessary IMHO, since neither deer, antelope, or elk are hard to kill with 150 grain CoreLokt bullets.
For loads, go with H4831sc, standard primers, same type once fired brass from THAT rifle, and whatever the bullet manual suggests for charge weights with the bullet of your choice. Stay off the absolute top end loads unless you get there slowly with plenty of testing. 130's should do about 3000 FPS easy, and 150's 2800 FPS. Even if they will go faster you'll never need it or notice it on the next 25 game animals.AW
Thanks for the suggestions. I have some time (2 weeks) to work up the loads. If I can't find a satisfactory load this week, more than likely Federal Premiums will get the call. He is going to be with me for the load development/shooting. I load 'em, he shoots 'em. What a deal huh? !!! Thanks again, Tom

Put 270 brass and bullets and 30-06 brass and bullets in a bowl. Mix well. Pick out the 30-06 brass and set aside on counter-top. Pick out the .277 bullets and set aside on paper towel. Pick out the .308 bullets and set aside on counter-top. Pour remaining 6 270 brass and set aside on paper towel. Prime all 12 pieces of brass. Put the appropriate amount of powder in the 30-06 brass and seat .308 bullets. Drink the beer for wasting 6 primers on 270 brass. Crumble and throw away 2 paper towels containing 270 brass and .277 bullets. Serve the 30-06 ammo hot from an appropriate rifle.
No - Seriously, the most common/popular loads for 270 with NP's were already listed above. Good luck to your brother.
When Jack O'Connor died, the main advocate for the 270 Winchester also died. His favorite load was 130/54/4831. I am working from pure 25 year old memory, but I think that is correct. It may or may not be within current loading manual limits. Your blood be on your own head!
Jack used over 60 grs of 4831 - basically what he could get in and Speer tested it and told him the pressure was 44,000 lbs and the velocity was 3200 fps. +/-.

That'll work!

My favorite load for my Rem 700 is a 130 Nosler BT with 59.0 gr. of IMR4831. It is very, very accurate and is smoking out there at 3100 fps.
