OT: A Hunting Story & A Life Lesson - The Bear Facts

Post by Pete44ru »

Long story, short - I got my now forty-something son interested in hunting before he was 10 y.o., and he took to it like a duck to water - avidly doesn't begin to describe his attitude towards hunting/fishing in all sorts of conditions - which condition continues to this day.
It seems that great minds think alike, so several (but not all) of the friends he's accumulated over the years are like-minded.

One is pictured below.

Instead of going on their annual Canadian (N.B.) black bear hunt, this young man decided instead to go about it the old fashioned way - working ILO paying.

He volunteered to work FOR the Indian guide this Spring's bear season, doing all the scut work - mopping up, K.P., butchering, wood hauling, whatever was asked of him w/o a whimper or hesitation.
He was even allowed to escort some "sports" to their bear baited stands.

Well, AFTER most of the sports had long gone, last week this fine young man took this bear with his bow.
I'd say he was well-paid, indeed.

No kidding!

I see a blood trail down the nose, did he take it between the eyes or was that an ender?

Thanks for the kind words - I'll relay them to the hunter.

I'm ignorant of the details at this point, and unsure of the exact size, except that IIRC, it's in the neighborhood of 400lbs.

All we just got was a quick email from his cell, after he bagged it - and there was a lot of excitement & congrats going on.

A 400lb bear, in the Spring after a Winter's hibernation, would most likely be a 500-600 pound class animal, IMHO, come late Fall, after chowing berries and such for a few months.

That's PLENTY big enough for my money, Thanks.

After the work & ethic the young man did & displayed, before he ever got a chance to go out hunting - I'd say it was indeed a trophy, no matter what the size.

Thank You for posting this Pete,it did my heart good. I don't even know that young man but I'm proud of him! It's nice to hear of someone his age who, when he wants something has the intestinal fortitude to work for it and do whatever it takes to get the job done.
That's a bear to be proud of and I'm sure he'll long remember that hunt and what it took to make it happen. My hats off to him and I wish him well in the future too. :)

Nice Bear. Better to work it off than pay it off too. Learn more that way.
